The present invention is usable in oxygen electrodes and air electrodes for air cells, fuel cells, electrochemical sensors and like electrochemical devices. The present invention provides a very stable oxygen-reducing electrode that can achieve electrochemical reduction of oxygen at a noble potential. The oxygen-reducing electrode of the present invention contains a cobalt tetrapyrazinoporphyrazine derivative represented by the following Structural Formula (1) as a catalytic component 

Electrode for use in oxygen reduction

For utilizing the chemical energy of a sugar directly as electric energy, electrolytic oxidation of a sugar on the negative electrode associated with cleavage of a carbon-carbon bond thereof is employed, thereby generating an electromotive force between the positive electrode and the negative electrode having an electrolyte therebetween. For an efficient oxidation of a sugar, it is effective for the negative electrode to have a component capable of forming a coordination compound with a sugar via a hydroxyl group thereof. Such a component may comprise a metal element capable of forming an amphoteric hydroxide. Use of an oxygen electrode as the positive electrode gives a battery capable of efficiently converting the chemical energy of a sugar into electric energy.

A positive electrode, a negative electrode, and an electrolyte intervening between the positive electrode and the negative electrode are employed, and a molecule capable of being excited due to absorption of light and electrochemically oxidizing carbohydrate is provided at at least either the negative electrode or the electrolyte, with production of electromotive force occurring between the positive electrode and the negative electrode as a result of supply of carbohydrate while the molecule is irradiated with light and oxidization of carbohydrate by the molecule at the negative electrode. The present invention provides a positive electrode, which contains at least one organic sulfide compound selected from the group consisting of a thiolato compound and a thiol compound, and at least one selected from the group consisting of sulfur and a lithium sulfide represented by Formula (1): (Li S) , where 0<x&lE;2 and n>0, a method of manufacturing the positive electrode, and a lithium battery using the positive electrode. Compared with the prior art lithium battery, the lithium battery using the positive electrode of the present invention has a greater capacity and a higher voltage. The positive electrode of the present invention effectively suppresses escape of the positive electrode active material from the positive electrode during charge and discharge operations and thus actualizes a secondary battery of high energy density having a less decrease in service capacity.

A method is disclosed for producing a composite electrode which can be configured in a battery. The method comprises steps of (1) preparing a solution of an organic disulfide compound in 2-pyrrolidone or its derivative, (2) adding polyaniline to the solution to dissolve, thereby obtaining a homogeneous liquid, and then (3) removing at least a part of the 2-pyrrolidone or its derivative from the homogeneous liquid to obtain a solid product wherein the organic disulfide compound and the polyaniline are homogeneously mixed.

Method of producing a composite electrode

A composite cathode for a battery is disclosed. In addition, a method is disclosed for producing said composite cathode which can be configured in a battery. The method comprises steps or (1) preparing a solution or an organic disulfide compound in 2-pyrrolidone or its derivative, (2) adding polyaniline to the solution to dissolve, thereby obtaining a homogeneous liquid, and then (3) removing at least a part of the 2-pyrrolidone or its derivative from the homogeneous liquid to obtain a solid product wherein the organic disulfide compound and the polyaniline are homogeneously mixed.

Composite cathode

A reversible electrode is provided comprising mainly organic disulfide compounds and having applications in such electrochemical devices as batteries, electrochromic displays, sensors, memories, etc. Large current charge/discharge is realized at room temperature with charge/discharge characteristics of excellent reversibility. Its structure is a composition combining organic disulfide compounds with disulfide bonding and conducting polymers. In other words, conducting polymers after being subjected to an electrolysis are put together with organic disulfide compounds. Thus, due to the effect of composition with conducting polymers, the oxidation/reduction reactions of organic disulfide compounds are accelerated and a reversible electrode characterized by utilization of a high energy density of organic disulfide compounds and the possibility of a large current charge/discharge is realized.

Composite electrode

A reversible electrochemical electrode applicable for a battery, sensor, memory or display device is made by ion-implanting a conductive solid polymer such as polyaniline with ions of alkaline or alkaline earth metal. A wide variety of selections and combinations of materials of the conductive solid polymer and ion is possible. In addition, n-type doping is possible.
