The present disclosure relates to a winding for an electrical machine. The winding comprises at least one flat conductor having at least one turn to form the winding, and the at least one flat conductor comprises a substantially L-shaped, U-shaped or V-shaped cross-section. The present disclosure also relates to an electrical machine that includes the winding and an aircraft that includes the electrical machine.

Windings for electrical machines

A cooling system for an electric motor includes means for mixing water with cooling air applied to the motor. The water is preferably provided as a mist of water droplets sprayed into cooling air e.g. cooling air generated by a propulsive element being driven by the motor.

Cooling system for electric machines

An electric propulsion system is provided which includes a prime mover; an electric generator which is arranged to be driven by the prime mover to generate electric power; an electric propulsion motor; and an integrated generator-motor controller arranged to control the supply of said electric power to the electric propulsion motor in response to a control signal. The integrated generator-motor controller is also arranged to feed-forward to the generator a power demand parameter associated with the control signal so as to control the power output of the generator.

Electric propulsion systems

A stator assembly for an electrical machine comprises a stator, a plurality of inserts and a heat sink. The stator comprises an annular core extending around an axis (X) and a plurality of axially extending slots. A plurality of sets of electrical windings is arranged within the slots. The windings have axial end portions arranged at axial ends of the core. The inserts comprise ceramic plates which are arranged in respective slots in the gaps (G) between adjacent respective electrical windings in the slots. The inserts extend axially from the respective slots for engagement with the heat sink.

Electrical machines

A stator assembly for an electrical machine comprises an annular core extending around an axis (X) and comprising a plurality of axially extending slots. A plurality of electrical windings are arranged in the slots and have end portions arranged at the axial ends of the core. A cooling jacket at least partially extends around a radially outer surface of the core. At least one annular cooling plate is mounted to an axial end of the cooling jacket and arranged in thermal contact with the end portions of the electrical windings.

An electric propulsion system, comprising a propeller and a motor arranged to rotate the propeller, the motor comprising an axial flux motor comprising a rotor disc and a stator disc mounted in face-to-face relationship with an air gap defined therebetween, the rotor disc driven to rotate relative to the stator disc to cause magnetic flux in the air gap to cause rotation of the propeller, characterised in that the propeller is directly attached to the rotor disc to rotate with the rotor disc.

Electric propulsion system

An electrical machine comprises a stator and a housing. The housing has an internal bore. The stator comprises an annular core mounted within the bore of the housing. The core comprises at least one key projecting radially outwardly from a radially outer surface thereof. The housing comprises at least one keyway in the bore. The at least one key of the core being received within the at least one keyway of the housing.

An electric motor includes one or more channels or grooves for directing fluid along the rotor as the rotor rotates.

Cooling of electric motors

A propeller system includes a rotatable housing having at least one propeller blade mounted thereon and an electric pitch control motor within the rotatable housing. A pitch control member is coupled to the propeller blade and extends through a wall of the rotatable housing. The pitch control motor is configured to move the pitch control member and to thereby vary the pitch of the propeller blade.

Propeller system

An electric machine includes a winding yoke defining a plurality of winding slots between circumferentially spaced apart teeth. A respective winding separator is mounted within each of the winding slots. The winding separator is mounted to a keying feature that extends from the winding yoke into the winding slot. The winding yoke can be a laminated structure, wherein the teeth and keying features are part of a common laminated structure with the winding yoke. The winding yoke can be a stator, and a rotor can be mounted within the stator for rotary movement relative to the stator.

An electric propulsion system includes a prime mover, a starter-motor generator configured to be driven by the prime mover to generate electric power, and an electric propulsion motor, and an integrated generator-motor controller arranged to control the supply of the electric power to the electric propulsion motor in response to a control signal, wherein the integrated generator-motor controller includes an active rectifier configured in a first mode to feed-forward to the starter-motor generator a power demand parameter associated with the control signal so as to control the power output of the starter-motor generator in order to start the prime mover.
