A system for purifying exhaust gas generated by an internal combustion engine including a bypass branching out from the exhaust pipe downstream of a catalyst and merging to the exhaust pipe, an adsorber installed in the bypass, a bypass valve member which closes the bypass, and an EGR conduit connected to the bypass at one end and connected to the air intake system for recirculating the exhaust gas to the air intake system. The bypass valve member is opened for a period after engine startup to introduce the exhaust gas such that the adsorber installed in the bypass adsorbs the unburnt HC component in the exhaust gas. The adsorber adsorbs the HC component when the exhaust temperature rises and the adsorbed component is recirculated to the air intake system through the EGR conduit. In the system, the bypass valve is provided at or close to the branching point in the exhaust pipe and a chamber is provided close to the branching point such that the conduit is connected to the bypass at the one end in the chamber. The bypass valve member is combined with an exhaust pipe valve member as a combination valve such that when the bypass valve member closes the bypass, the exhaust pipe valve member opens the exhaust pipe. With the arrangement, the system can effectively prevent the exhaust pipe from being clogged even when a valve for closing a bypass is stuck in the closed position. An exhaust gas purification system of an internal combustion engine having a bypass exhaust gas passage, openable through a switch-over valve, branched from an exhaust pipe at a location downstream of a catalytic converter and again merged into the exhaust pipe at a downstream point, an adsorbent installed in the bypass exhaust gas passage which adsorbs unburned component of the exhaust gas, and an EGR pipe which recirculates the exhaust gas including the unburned components at a location upstream of the catalytic converter, wherein the EGR pipe is made of metal such as stainless steel and is connected to the bypass exhaust gas passage such that the recirculation pipe is brought into thermal contact with the exhaust pipe, thereby enabling to effectively prevent blocking or corrosion of the EGR pipe or switch-over valve from occurring. The inner wall of the recirculation pipe is formed with liquid repellent and oil repellent film so as to overcome moisture-related problems more effectively.

A first exhaust gas sensor (air-fuel ratio sensor) and a second exhaust gas sensor (O sensor) are disposed respectively upstream and downstream of a catalytic converter. An exhaust system E which ranges from the exhaust gas sensor to the exhaust gas sensor and includes the catalytic converter is regarded as an object exhaust system E, and a behavior of the object exhaust system E is modeled. When an internal combustion engine is in operation, parameters to be set of the model of the object exhaust system E are sequentially identified based on the data of outputs of the exhaust gas sensors A deteriorated state of the catalytic converter is determined based on the data of the identified values. Concurrent with the determination of the deteriorated state, a target air-fuel ratio for the internal combustion engine is sequentially determined in order to converge the output of the exhaust gas sensor to a given target value, and the air-fuel ratio of the internal combustion engine is controlled to converge the output (the detected value of the air-fuel ratio) of the first exhaust gas sensor to the target air-fuel ratio, for thereby allowing the catalytic converter to achieve an optimum purifying capability. In this manner, the deteriorated state of the catalytic converter can be determined in various operation states of the internal combustion engine while keeping the purifying capability of the catalytic converter

Method of judging deterioration of emission gas control catalyst device

A system for discriminating degradation of an exhaust purification system of an internal combustion engine having an adsorbent installed at a bypass exhaust gas passage branched from an exhaust pipe of the engine, which is opened by a switch-over valve at starting of the engine to introduce the exhaust gas such that the adsorbent adsorbs unburned HC in exhaust gas generated by the engine and is closed such that the adsorbent desorbs the adsorbed HC and the desorbed HC is thereafter recirculated at a position upstream of a catalyst. Based on the fact, due to the adsorption effect, the HC concentration at a downstream point is lower than that at an upstream point, in the system, the concentration of the HC introduced in the bypass exhaust gas passage in the adsorption mode is detected and compared with a threshold value and the degradation of the adsorbent is discriminated, thereby enabling to improve the discrimination accurately.

Degradation discrimination system of internal combustion engine exhaust gas purification system

A system for discriminating degradation of an exhaust purification system of an internal combustion engine having an adsorbent installed at a bypass exhaust gas passage branched from an exhaust pipe of the engine, which is opened by a switch-over valve at starting of the engine to introduce the exhaust gas such that the adsorbent adsorbs unburned HC in exhaust gas generated by the engine and is closed such that the adsorbent desorbs the adsorbed HC and the desorbed HC is thereafter recirculated at a position upstream of a catalyst. Based on the fact that the HC concentration rising time interval becomes short as the adsorbent degrades and adsorption capacity decrease, the time lapse since engine starting until the detected HC concentration exceeds a predetermined level is measured and is compared with a threshold value such that the adsorbent is discriminated to be degraded if the measured time lapse is less than the threshold value, thereby enabling to improve the discrimination accurately.

A system for purifying exhaust gas generated by an internal combustion engine having an adsorbent, installed in an exhaust system of the engine, which adsorbs unburned components of the exhaust gas such as hydrocarbons generated by the engine. The system has a first temperature sensor for detecting a temperature of the adsorbent and timer for measuring a time until the detected temperature becomes greater or equal to a predetermined value, when the measured time is less than a threshold value, it is discriminated that the adsorbent deteriorates. With this, the deterioration of the adsorbent can be discriminated accurately.

A system for purifying exhaust gas generated by an internal combustion engine having a bypass exhaust gas passage branching from an exhaust pipe which is opened or closed by a switch-over valve, and an adsorbent which adsorbs unburneds component in the exhaust gas installed at the bypass exhaust passage. In the system, when the engine operation is within a high engine speed and high load region, the switch-over valve is operated to open the bypass exhaust gas passage to reduce noise due to switch-over valve chattering, etc. Similarly, the bypass exhaust gas passage is opened at that range, when the exhaust gas temperature is greater or equal to a predetermined value, to introduce high temperature exhaust gas to burn away cloggy material adhered to the adsorbent which would otherwise deteriorate or degrade the adsorbent.

A control system for controlling an internal combustion engine which discharge exhaust gases through an emission purifier includes a controller which increases the quantity of intake air drawn into the internal combustion engine while the internal combustion engine is idling after the internal combustion engine has started to operate, to a level which is greater by a predetermined increase than the quantity of intake air drawn into the internal combustion engine while the internal combustion engine is idling normally. The controller also generates a command value for ignition timing of the internal combustion engine according to a feedback control process to converge the rotational speed of the internal combustion engine toward a predetermined target rotational speed, and controlling the ignition timing of the internal combustion engine based on the generated command value thereby to retard the ignition timing. The controller establishes the target rotational speed by changing the target rotational speed from a preset rotational speed toward a predetermined idling speed after the rotational speed of the internal combustion engine has reached the preset rotational speed which is higher than the idling speed after the quantity of intake air drawn into the internal combustion engine has started being increased.
