In a four wheel drive vehicle, a four wheel drive device receives rotational power from an engine and provides it to the combination of the front wheels of the vehicle and also to the combination of the rear wheels of the vehicle. A device is provided for selectively coupling the rotation of the combination of the front vehicle wheels and the rotation of the combination of the rear vehicle wheels. A control device is provided for this front/rear coupling device, and includes: (a) a means for detecting the rotational speed of the combination of the front wheels of the vehicle; (b) a means for detecting the rotational speed of the combination of the rear wheels of the vehicle; and: (c) a means for controlling the front/rear coupling device, so that its operation is substantially not restricted when the discrepancy between the rotational speed of the combination of the front wheels of the vehicle and the rotational speed of the combination of the rear wheels of the vehicle is not greater than a certain threshold value; while, when the discrepancy between the rotational speed of the combination of the front wheels of the vehicle and the rotational speed of the combination of the rear wheels of the vehicle is greater than the certain threshold value, coupling between the rotation of the combination of the front vehicle wheels and the rotation of the combination of the rear vehicle wheels is substantially prohibited. The method of operation of this device is also disclosed.

A rotary fluid pump of a non-lubrication type having a pump cavity formed within a cylindrical stator housing and a pair of recessed end head assembles. A drive shaft is eccentrically journalled in the end heads with a rotor mounted thereon with vanes slidably disposed in radial grooves in the rotor. A pair of sealing plates disposed between the ends of the stator having and the end heads divide the pump cavity into a pair of end chambers and an intermediate rotor chamber. An outlet port provides fluid communication between the rotor chamber and a discharge hole in one of the end chambers so that fluid passage for discharge to the atmosphere is provided through the rotor chamber, outlet port, end chamber and discharge hole.

A rotary pump having a housing with a cylindrical cavity and end heads at each end to form a pump cavity. A drive shaft journaled by bearings carries a rotor having a number of movable vanes. Seal plates at each end of the pump cavity to divide it into a pair of end chambers defined by the seal plates and the end heads. Fluid inlet and discharge ports are provided in the sealing plates. The ports are formed as protrusions in the end plates towards the end chambers, as recesses therein or extending as openings into the end heads.

A dry rotary fluid pump or compressor includes a rotor eccentrically supported in a rotor chamber generally defined by a stator housing and two end heads. Two side plates each interposed between the housing and each of the end heads form end chambers between the respective side plates and end heads. The end chambers are supplied with a pressure higher than that of the rotor chamber so as to bring the side plates into close contact with opposite side faces of the rotor. The side plates are formed of a material having an abrasion resistance higher than that of at least the opposite side faces of the rotor.

In a vane type rotary fluid pump or compressor, a plurality of vanes are slidably fitted in the body of a rotor at an angle with a radial plane passing through the axial center line of the rotor to move radially outwardly from the rotor in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the rotor. Each tip of the vanes is provided with a flat surface frictionally guided by a cylindrical inner wall of a stator housing and a taper surface extending from the front end of the flat surface toward the direction of rotation of the rotor. The flat surface of the vane has a predetermined width sealingly in contact with the inner wall of the stator housing.

A unitary, first pressure regulator valve is provided which has at least two spaced valve lands and a fluid passage interconnecting the unitary, first pressure regulator valve and the manual valve. In the range P, one of the valve lands of the manual valve is adapted to cut the line pressure. In the range R, the aforementioned fluid passage is blocked by another of the valve lands of the manual valve. The fluid passage communicates with a fluid chamber provided between valve lands of the manual valve in the ranges of N, D, '3', '2' and '1'.
