A finisher includes a folding device which folds a sheet having an image formed surface, a reversing mechanism which reverses the sheet, and a conveying path for conveying the sheet bypassing the reversing mechanism. The finisher decides whether to pass the sheet through the reversing mechanism based on whether the sheet is to be folded. The finisher adjusts both folded sheets and unfolded sheets in the order of page numbers and staples a sheaf of the sheets easily and accurately, and also utilizes space efficiently and prevents the finisher size from enlarging.

A finisher connected to a copying machine produces a bound booklet by inserting papers from the copying machine into a cover with an adhesive layer of a hot-melt adhesive which is coated on the inner surface of near a spine interconnecting a front board and a back board, and heating the cover and a sheaf of papers, and joining them by adhesion. Thus, the series of operations ranging from the preparation of documents through the bookbinding can be facilitated and expedited.

Finisher for use with an image forming apparatus

A finisher is disclosed which is connected to a copying machine and possessed of a stapler which effects a stapling treatment on the sheets discharged from the copying machine and a binder which inserts the discharged sheets into a cover and binds by adhesion the sheets and the cover for bookbinding. This finisher has a memory for memorizing the stapling treatment or the binding treatment as a treating mode in advance, a staple sensor for detecting the existence of the staple, and a cover sensor for detecting the existence of the cover. When either of the sensors detects the lack of staple or cover, a feasible treating mode other than the unfeasible treating mode due to the lack of staple or cover in the treating mode memorized in the memory is executed prior to the unfeasible treating mode.

A finisher includes moving devices, which are movably mounted relative to a conveying path for applying additional-workings to a sheet having an image formed surface, such as a folding stopper which adjusts the position for folding the sheet, an aligning device which aligns the edge of sheet being temporarily stacked, and a head unit of a stapler which staples the sheet at a proper position. The finisher retracts or returns the moving devices to their relevant home positions, which are separated by prescribed distances from the conveying path when a jam of a sheet occurs. Accordingly, the finisher forms a space which accepts a user's hand in the neighborhood of the stuck sheet, improves the operational efficiency of removing the sheet, and prevents the user from touching the moving devices and inevitably moving them to abnormal positions.

A finisher connected to a digital copying machine includes a folding device for folding output paper into Z shape, a binding device for binding a sheaf of the papers into a preset size, and a control unit that determines whether image property will be affected or not when the images are printed on the A4 size paper, and print on the A3 size paper and fold the A3 paper into the Z-shape if it is determined that the property will be affected. Therefore, even if the original document size is different from the exclusive use cover size, the finisher provides good legibility of the characters printing its output automatically on paper of a proper size matching the exclusive use cover. In other words, good-looking bookbinding can be easily accomplished for documents of varying sizes without manually adjusting enlargement/reduction factors.

An image forming apparatus is mounted in a copying machine or a printer and is adapted to serve the purpose of bundling and stapling a plurality of copied or printed sheets, automatically encasing the stapled bundle of sheets with a cover specially designed for enclosure, and binding the cover. The apparatus has an image memory, an image signal processing part, an image producing part, a sheet accumulating part, a cover storing part, a cover delivering part, a cover supporting part, a sheet delivering and inserting part, a heating part, and a CPU.

A finisher comprising a non-sort tray disposed at an uppermost location, a stacking tray for stapling disposed at an intermediate location, and a large-capacity storing tray disposed at a lower location. In a non-sort mode, sheets discharged from a copying machine are first stored in the non-sort tray and, when the non-sort tray is occupied full, subsequent incoming sheets are stored in the storing tray. In a stapling mode, sheets are collected on the stacking tray and, after a stapling operation, they are stored in the storing tray.
