A reading apparatus includes an auto document feeder configured to be openable and closable around a hinge with respect to a unit including an image sensor. The auto document feeder includes a roller configured to move a document relative to the image sensor, a motor, a gear train configured to transmit a rotation of a rotational shaft of the motor to the roller, and an encoder unit configured to detect rotation information of the motor, and including a sensor and a code wheel. An orientation of the rotational shaft is substantially parallel to a rotational axis of the hinge, and the gear train is arrayed in a direction of an extension of the rotational shaft. A gear that is a part of the gear train is attached to one end of the rotational shaft, and the code wheel is attached to the other end thereof.

An image reading apparatus includes an image reading unit, a compression spring unit, a braking unit, and a switching unit. The compression spring unit serves as an opening and closing mechanism for the image reading unit. The braking unit brakes the opening and closing movement of the image reading unit. The switching unit transmits the rotation of the image reading unit to the braking unit when the image reading unit closes, but does not transmit the rotation of the image reading unit to the braking unit when the image reading unit opens.

Disclosed is a sheet feeding apparatus capable of easily changing an amount of conveyance of sheet materials without increasing the costs. A sheet feeding roller body is constructed of a cylindrical sheet feeding roller support member provided with a sheet feeding roller and a gear on both sides thereof. A support portion of a sheet feeding shaft is inserted with a gap through a through-hole of the sheet feeding roller body, whereby the sheet feeding roller is rotatably supported by the sheet feeding shaft. The sheet feeding shaft receives a driving force via a sheet feeding shaft gear and thus rotates. The sheet feeding roller of the sheet feeding roller body receives a driving force via the gear from an ASF control gear and thus rotates, whereby the sheet feeding shaft and the sheet feeding roller can be rotated with different numbers of rotations.

For each stepped increment of the line feed motor, the line feeding device feeds the recording medium (m&#xd7;1/n) pixels of the print head pixel resolution, where m and n are integer numbers and m is greater than n. The j nozzles that print in any one scan of the print head are controlled based on the number of increments of the line feed motor. Additionally, a print driver calculates a line skip amount and a buffer offset amount, and adjusts a starting position for storing of the image data in a print buffer in a case where a first line of image data to be stored in the print buffer is white data.

A sheet material feeding device includes a sheet material stacking means for stacking sheet materials; a feeding roller for feeding the sheet material stacked on the sheet material stacking means; a separation roller, driven by the feeding roller, for separating a sheet material from the sheet materials; a separation roller holder for rotatably holding the separation roller, the separation roller holder is movable by rotation thereof between a position in which the separation roller is contacted to the feeding roller and a position in which the separation roller is away from the feeding roller; and returning means for returning a sheet material or sheet materials other than the sheet material separated out by the separation roller to the sheet material stacking means.
