A fluorescent substance is irradiated with laser light and emits illumination light of a prescribed color. A condenser lens collects the illumination light. A moving mechanism moves the fluorescent substance in a direction toward the condenser lens and in a direction away from the condenser lens. An image display element generates image light by modulating the illumination light according to an image. A light quantity adjustment mechanism adjusts the quantity of the image light by changing the size of an opening through which the illumination light or the image light passes in order to adjust the contrast of a projected image. A controller controls the moving mechanism such that the distance between the fluorescent substance and the condenser lens is a distance in association with an F-number corresponding to the adjustment state of the quantity of the image light implemented by means of the light quantity adjustment mechanism.

Projection type display device

A light source device includes a blue laser light module that emits a blue laser light, and a dichroic mirror including an incident surface, and that reflects the incident blue laser light in a second direction different from a first direction which is an emission direction of the blue laser light so as to introduce the blue laser light into a fluorescent body, and allow part of light excited by the fluorescent body and emitted in a direction opposite to the second direction to penetrate through the dichroic mirror. The incident surface is provided with a dichroic coat region coated with a dichroic coat so as to reflect the blue laser light, and the dichroic coat region is formed on the incident surface such that a length in a direction orthogonal to the first direction is longer as a distance from the blue laser module is farther.

Light source device

A light source device includes an optical elementhaving a first faceopposed to a solid light emitting element. The optical elementincludes second and third facesopposing in parallel to each other and both substantially perpendicular to the first face, a fourth facesubstantially perpendicular to the second and third facesand also obliquely-opposed to the first faceand a fifth faceas an exit face. The fifth facehas an area smaller than an area of a light emitting face of the solid light emitting element. The light source device further includes a polarization converting elementhaving an incident surface opposing in substantially-parallel to the fifth facethrough a space, polarization separating elementsfor separating incident light from the optical elementin polarization, a first reflecting surfacefor reflecting one of polarization-separated fluxes and wave platesfor converting either of phases of the polarization-separated fluxes.
