A crucible-type continuous melting furnace includes a preheating tower for storing the material to be melted, and an exhaust port on the top thereof; a melting crucible furnace disposed below the preheating tower and having a melting crucible to which the material to be melted is supplied from the preheating tower; a heating burner for heating the melting crucible; and a preheating burner for preheating the material to be melted and disposed in a position that is higher than the heating burner; the melting crucible furnace having an introduction portion for introducing a combustion gas from the heating burner into the preheating tower; and the melting crucible having a molten metal outlet on the side wall for discharging the molten metal obtained by melting the material.

In an ultrasonic flow meter for measuring a flow rate of a fluid flowing through a conduit by detecting a propagating time difference between a forward propagating time of an ultrasonic wave propagating within the conduit in a forward direction and a backward propagating time of an ultrasonic wave propagating within the conduit in a backward direction, forward and backward ultrasonic wave signals generated by ultrasonic vibrating elements are sampled to derive forward and backward digital data series x and y, which are stored in a memory, the forward and backward digital data series x and y are read out of the first and second memory units and total sums of absolute difference values between the forward and backward digital data series x and y are calculated, while data positions of these backward and forward digital data series x and y are relatively shifted, a shift amount of data positions at which a total sum of absolute difference values becomes minimum is detected, an ultrasonic propagating time difference is derived in accordance with the detected shift amount of data positions, a flow speed of the fluid within the conduit is derived from the ultrasonic wave propagating time difference, and a flow rate of the fluid flowing through the conduit is derived in accordance with the flow speed and a known cross sectional area of the conduit.

In a reproducing apparatus having the capability of reproducing data in both directions from a recording medium in the form of a tape, when a program recorded on the recording medium in the form of a tape is accessed in a high speed mode, a fast forward tape travel operation or a fast reverse tape travel operation is performed while monitoring the program number recorded in the area opposite to the current reproducing position, and the searching speed is controlled when the searching position reaches a location near a reverse position so that the searching position does not go beyond the reverse position. A recording apparatus operates to record a program number on a recording medium in the form of a tape on the basis of the program number which was recorded at the end of the previous recording operation so that a correct value is given as the program number to the current recording operation.

A colored refractory material for lining an instrument/apparatus used at a high temperature is formed by mixing a powder of a raw material containing ceramics with a coloring agent and kneading with a liquid using a binder. The refractory material is put in lining for a portion being in contact with a high temperature molten substance or being exposed to a high temperature atmosphere, and is dried by heating while adjusting a temperature and a heating time on the basis of color change on the surface of the refractory material.

A method and apparatus for processing image data produced by an electronic camera (such as image data read from a CCD device of an electronic camera) by over-sampling and then interpolating the data to convert the format and/or resolution of the data. The format of the image data may be converted to a format suitable for display on a computer monitor or the like. The invention enables the aspect ratio of a frame of image data output from a CCD device to be converted to 1:1. Preferably, the image data are filtered by a filter having a characteristic opposite to the frequency characteristic of the interpolation function, and then interpolated so that the interpolation can be carried out at a portion where the change of the frequency characteristic is small, thereby improving the image quality of the fully processed output image. The invention can be implemented in an electronic camera including an over-sampling filter (4) for over-sampling input data N times and an interpolation circuit (5) for interpolating the output from the over-sampling filter.

An electronic still camera wherein an image compression circuit can be simplified includes a lens system, a shutter, an image sensor and a processing circuit. A video signal for one frame outputted from the processing circuit in response to a shutter operation is written into a memory. A video signal read out from the memory is compressed in accordance with the JPEG system by an image compression circuit and then written into a memory card. The image sensor is constituted from an image pickup section and a product sum calculation section. A CMD image sensor capable of non-destructively reading out a picture signal is used as the image pickup section. The product sum calculation section performs DCT processing required for compression processing of the JPEG system. Since a detected image signal processed by DCT processing is obtained from the image sensor, DCT processing of the image compression circuit is unnecessary.

A synchronizing signal detector for detecting a received television synchronizing signal includes a synchronizing signal separator for separating the synchronizing signal from a received composite television signal. A phase-locked loop is provided, including an adjustable oscillator and a phase comparator for comparing the difference between the output of the synchronizing signal separator and the output of the local oscillator to produce an error signal. A sensor senses this error signal to indicate that the output of the synchronizing signal separator is, in fact, the synchronizing signal, when the error signal is of a predetermined value. In an AFT circuit, the error signal is used to control the tuning condition of the tuning section included in the television receiver. In one embodiment, the tuning section is an electronic tuner whose tuning condition is determined by a digital count. This count is changed until the error signal is sensed as being of the predetermined value, whereupon the digital count is inhibited from changing further.

An oscillator circuit is provided which employs a single active element. In particular, the circuit utilizes a novel four-terminal semiconductor device which is able to act as a transistor with three of its terminals and, in case of use as the transistor, has the emitter-grounded current amplification factor h.sub.FE controllable with a voltage at its fourth terminal. When the novel four-terminal semiconductor device is connected so as to operate as an emitter-grounded transistor, voltage changes at its output terminal, which corresponds to the collector of the transistor, is the same in phase as voltage changes at its fourth terminal. This fact is utilized in the present invention to cause oscillation by the generative feedback from the output terminal to the fourth terminal.
