A drive system for an automotive vehicle of the front-and-rear wheel drive type, comprising a primary drive mechanism for drive of a set of front road wheels and an ancillary drive mechanism for drive of a set of rear roar wheels, wherein the front road wheels are driven by operation of the primary drive mechanism at a two-wheel drive mode and wherein the front and rear road wheels are driven by operation of both the primary and ancillary drive mechanisms at a four-wheel drive mode. In the drive system, a drive power applied to the primary road wheels is restricted to a predetermined value when the vehicle is driven by the primary and ancillary drive mechanisms at the front-and-rear wheel drive mode.

A clamp band which includes a strip member having an intermediate portion formed to substantially conform to the outline of an article to be fastened and two ends projected outward from the intermediate portion and a lever member welded to the two ends of the strip member. One of the two ends of the strip member extends approximately tangentially from the intermediate portion and the other extends to make an acute angle. The lever member is welded to the outside of the end located nearer the intermediate portion of the these ends when two ends of the strip member are brought down. The lever member is formed to contact closely an outer peripheral surface of the strip member and has high hardness edge portions extending longitudinally thereof.

Clamp band

A drive shaft assembly has a first shaft, a casing receiving an end portion of the first shaft through an opening at its one end and provided with a first flange on the periphery of the other end, a second shaft provided with a second flange to be joined with the first flange, and an end cover held between the first and second flanges and adapted to hold a sealing member in association with the first flange. The first and second flanges and end cover are respectively provided with bolt holes through which bolts extend. Two knock pins are secured to one of the first and second flanges and extend in an axial direction through knock pin holes in the end cover and are received in knock pin holes provided in the other flange. Centering of the first and second shafts can effectively be made by centering the first and second flanges by way of the knock pin engagement.

Drive shaft assembly

An improvement in a double Cardan universal joint having a pair of spiders connected by a ring-shaped coupling member, a pair of yoke members angularly movably connected with each other by the spiders, a centering assembly for aligning the yoke members with each other and defining a reservoir for grease within a bridge forming a part of one of the yoke members and a breather hole formed in the bridge for making the reservoir communicate with the atmosphere. The improvement comprises a valve of elastic material inserted in the breather hole and capable of elastically blockading the communication of the reservoir with the atmosphere when internal pressure of the reservoir is below a predetermined amount and being elastically deformed to make the reservoir communicate with the atmosphere when the internal pressure reaches or exceeds the predetermined amount.

Double cardan universal joint

A sealing device for a joint, such as a tripod joint including flanges to be joined to each other, has a sealing member having an endless shape and provided with a plurality of projections and an end cover having its periphery held between the flanges and adapted to hold the sealing member in association with the flange of the casing. The end cover is provided with a plurality of through holes to receive the projections of the sealing member. The holes are visible from outside when the flanges are joined to form the joint.

Sealing device for joint

A sealing device disposed between flanges of a joint assembly comprises a sealing member having an endless shape and an end cover with its periphery held between the flanges and adapted to hold the sealing member inside of the periphery in association with the flange of a casing. The end cover has, along its periphery, first support portions spaced in equal interval and second support portions located between the adjacent first support portions. The second support portions are formed by folding back parts of the end cover and have bolt holes. The end cover further has a setting portion for the sealing member, inside of the periphery. The setting portion is recessed for a depth corresponding to the thickness of the end cover from the faces of the first and second support portions which are in contact with the flange of the casing. The faces of the second support portions which are in contact with the flange of a second shaft are in the same plane as the face of the setting portion on the side opposite to the face on which the sealing member sits.

Joint assembly

A transmission includes two drive shafts of equal length, each flexibly drivingly coupled at its outer end to a driven wheel; a differential axially located closer to a first one of the wheels and further from the other, which has a first power output shaft extending towards the first wheel which is flexibly drivingly coupled at its outer end to the inner end of the one of the drive shafts whose outer end is drivingly connected to the first wheel, and a second power output shaft extending towards the other wheel; an intermediate shaft, flexibly drivingly coupled at its inner end to the outer end of the second power output shaft, and flexibly drivingly coupled at its outer end to the inner end of the one of the drive shafts whose outer end is drivingly connected to the other wheel; a bracket, mounted at one end to a fixed member; and a deep groove radial ball bearing. The outer race of the ball bearing is fixedly mounted to the other end of the bracket, and the inner race of the ball bearing supports an outer part of the intermediate shaft and is fixedly mounted to it. The radius of the cross section of the inner race groove is approximately 0.52 times the diameter of the ball bearing balls, while the radius of the cross section of the outer race groove is approximately 0.60 times the diameter of the balls.
