The present invention provides a resin material that comprises an ethylene-modified vinyl alcohol polymer as a main component, and that excels in hue, water solubility, and aqueous-solution viscosity stability. The present invention also provides an aqueous solution and an adhesive comprising such a resin material. There is provided a multilayer structure comprising a layer (A) containing an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer having an ethylene unit content of 1 mol % or more and less than 20 mol %, a viscosity-average polymerization degree of 200 to 5000, and a saponification degree of 80 to 99.7 mol %, wherein a block character of ethylene units is 0.90 to 0.99; and a layer (B) containing at least one resin selected from the group consisting of a polyolefin resin, a polyester resin and a polyamide resin. Such a multilayer structure has excellent oxygen-gas barrier performance. In addition, an aqueous solution containing the ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer exhibits excellent viscosity stability even after long-term storage. Therefore, even after a long period of time from preparation of the aqueous solution, it can be uniformly applied to a substrate and thus, a multilayer structure having excellent oxygen-gas barrier performance can be provided.

A composition containing: modified polyvinyl alcohol; and unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or a salt thereof, wherein the modified polyvinyl alcohol has a viscosity-average degree of polymerization of from 400 to 3500, has a degree of saponification of from 68 mol % to 99.9 mol %, and contains from 0.01 mol % to 1.50 mol % of an acryloyl group or a methacryloyl group in a side chain, the unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or a salt thereof is at least one selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, sodium acrylate, and sodium methacrylate, and in the composition, a mass ratio of the modified polyvinyl alcohol/the unsaturated monocarboxylic acid or a salt thereof is from 82/18 to 99.9/0.1. The composition is thus provided that is excellent in water solubility and storage stability and polymerization stability of a vinyl compound and contains the modified polyvinyl alcohol.

Release paper base paper includes a substrate; and a coating agent containing a modified polyvinyl alcohol (A) and sodium acetate, the substrate coated with the coating agent, wherein the modified polyvinyl alcohol (A) has 0.005 mol % or more and less than 10 mol % of double bonds derived from unsaturated carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof (B) in side chains, has 1.4 mol % or more and 2.0 mol % or less of 1,2-glycol bond, units, and is water soluble, and a content of the sodium acetate relative to the modified polyvinyl alcohol (A) is 0.01 mass % or more and 10 mass % or less. The release paper base paper of the present invention is excellent in sealing properties for silicone. Use of the release paper base paper allows acceleration of curing of silicone in a release layer and improvement in adhesion between the substrate and the release layer.

The present invention provides a modified vinyl alcohol polymer having a side chain with an ethylenic double bond, and having reduced a water-insoluble content and superior storage stability in the form of an aqueous solution, methods of making thereof, a modified vinyl alcohol polymer (A) having a degree of saponification of 68 mol % or more and less than 99.9 mol %, and a viscosity-average degree of polymerization of 200 or more and less than 3,000, and comprising a side chain with 0.01 mol % or more and less than 0.50 mol % of a double bond derived from an esterification agent, the esterification agent being one or more selected from the group consisting of (i) itaconic acid and/or derivatives thereof, and (ii) methacrylic acid and/or derivatives thereof, and the modified vinyl alcohol polymer (A) having a peak width Wof at least 2.85 minutes and less than 3.70 minutes at a height of 5% from the baseline in a peak measured by HPLC.

A method for producing a vinyl polymer by suspension-polymerizing a vinyl compound in the presence of a dispersion stabilizer, wherein the dispersion stabilizer contains a polyvinyl alcohol and a composition containing a modified polyvinyl alcohol and a compound; the modified polyvinyl alcohol contains double bonds derived from an unsaturated carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof in side chains; the compound is a compound having two or more hydroxy groups bonded to a conjugated double bond; the modified polyvinyl alcohol has a saponification degree and a viscosity-average polymerization degree different from those of the polyvinyl alcohol; a content of the compound in the composition is 0.001 parts by mass or more and less than 5 parts by mass based on 100 parts by mass of the modified polyvinyl alcohol; and a mass ratio of the composition to the polyvinyl alcohol is 50/50 to 90/10.

There is provided a composition (C) comprising a modified PVA (A) and a compound (B), wherein the modified PVA (A) contains 0.01 mol % or more and less than 2 mol % of double bonds derived from an unsaturated carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof in side chains; the compound (B) is a compound having a conjugated double bond and two or more hydroxy groups bonded to the conjugated double bond, or a salt or oxide thereof; and a content of the compound (B) in the composition (C) is 0.001 parts by mass or more and less than 5 parts by mass based on 100 parts by mass of the modified PVA (A). Dispersion stabilizer for suspension polymerization, and manufacturing method for vinyl resin

A dispersion stabilizer in the present invention contains an aqueous emulsion (a) obtained by dispersing a polymer (A) having an ethylenically unsaturated monomer unit in an aqueous medium, a PVA (B) having a degree of saponification of 65 mol % or more and less than 82 mol % and a viscosity-average degree of polymerization of 250 or more and less than 1500, and a PVA (C) having a degree of saponification of 82 mol % or more and less than 98 mol % and a viscosity-average degree of polymerization of 1500 or more and less than 4000. The dispersion stabilizer contains: 7 to 51 mass % of the polymer (A); 40 to 84 mass % of the PVA (B); and 9 to 53 mass % of the PVA (C), with respect to a total amount of the polymer (A), the PVA (B), and the PVA (C). A vinyl resin satisfying required performance can be obtained using the dispersion stabilizer.
