Using a heat-resistant catalyst as above makest it possible to increase the reaction rate by heating, and produce hydroxyalkanal at high selectivity and yield out of an industrially advantageous high-concentration unsaturated aldehyde solution.

A process of producing hydroxyalkanal comprises a step of hydrating a raw material, namely, an unsaturated aldehyde, in an aqueous solution in the presence of a lead-carrying heterogeneous acid catalyst promoting the hydration reaction. According to the above method, the lead-carrying heterogeneous acid catalyst curbs the consecutive reaction of the reaction product, namely, hydroxyalkanal. Thus, hydroxyalkanal can be produced with high selectivity at high yield out of a high-concentration unsaturated aldehyde solution. Moreover, the catalyst can be used repetitively for a considerable period of continuous use in a stable manner, thereby further improving the yield of hydroxyalkanal.

Compound fine particles include inorganic fine particles and an organic polymer bound to surfaces of the inorganic fine particles, and have an average particle diameter of 5 to 200 nm and a particle diameter variation coefficient of 50% or less. The compound fine particles are obtainable by hydrolyzing and condensing an organic polymer, wherein the organic polymer has, per molecule, at least one polysiloxane group containing at least one Si--OR.sup.1 group, wherein R.sup.1 denotes a hydrogen atom, an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl group, or an unsubstituted or substituted acyl group. Organic-inorganic composite particles which include a (meth)acrylic resin framework and a polysiloxane framework having in its molecule an organosilicon containing a silicon atom directly and chemically combined with at least one carbon atom of the (meth)acrylic resin framework, and also contain 25 wt % or more of SiO.sub.2 which constitutes the polysiloxane framework and have a mean particle diameter of .gtoreq.0.5 .mu.m. The particles have the mechanical resilience necessary to maintain a constant gap distance between a pair of members to be arranged with the correct gap distance between them, and the hardness and fracture strength necessary to maintain the gap constant with smaller numbers; and also do not readily cause physical damage to the members. The composite particles can be employed as spacers 8 for a liquid crystal display as they stand or with an adhesive layer formed on the surface. The composite particles can also have a conductive layer formed on the surface, and be employed as conductive particles.

Organic-inorganic composite particles and production process therefor

In a process of producing hydroxyalkanal, a raw material, namely, an unsaturated aldehyde, is hydrated with a solution in the presence of a catalyst, and alcohol is added to the solution. A adding amount of the alcohol with respect to the unsaturated aldehyde is preferably in a range between 0.001 percent by weight and 10 percent by weight. According to this process, a consecutive reaction (side reaction) of a reaction product, namely, hydroxyalkanal, is curbed by the alcohol added to the solution, thereby making it possible to produce hydroxyalkanal at high selectivity out of a high-density unsaturated aldehyde solution. Therefore, the above process can trigger a reaction of an industrially advantageous unsaturated aldehyde solution, and thus improves the yield of hydroxyalkanal.

A method for the production of microfine colored particles, characterized by subjecting a polymeric monomer suspended in a suspension medium to suspension polymerization in the presence of a coloring agent and/or a magnetic powder thereby forming microfine globular colored particles possessing an average particle diameter in the range of from 3 to 50 .mu.m, heat treating said microfine globular colored particles with water as a heating medium at a temperature in the range of from 50.degree. C. to 130.degree. C. thereby inducing fusion of said particles and giving rise to blocks of fused particles, and then disintegrating said blocks of particles to an average particle diameter substantially equal to the average particle diameter of said microfine globular colored particles existent prior to said fusion.

A method for the production of powder of fine inorganic particles excellent in dispersibility in various solvents from a slurry of said fine inorganic particles containing water, which method comprises preparing a slurry as a raw material by incorporating in said slurry at least one orgaic compound selected from the group consisting of (A) methanol and (B) organic compound capable of dissolving of dissolving water in an amount of not less than 1.0% by weight at 20.degree. C. and forming a two-component azeotropic mixture of water and organic compounds having a water content of not less than 4.0% by weight and converting said prepared slurry into powder by the use of a powderization apparatus comprising an externally heatable pipe one end of which serves as a slurry inlet and the other end of which serves as a device for separating the produced powder and a vapor held in a vacuum state and a powder and a powder collecting chamber connected to said separating device.
