A variable displacement vane pump includes a first body, a second body, an adapter ring, a cam ring, and a rotor. The first body includes a cylinder portion, and a base portion covering a first longitudinal end of an inner space of the cylinder portion. The second body covers a second longitudinal end of the inner space of the first body. The adapter ring has an outer radial periphery fitted and fixed to an inner radial periphery of the cylinder portion of the first body. The cam ring is mounted inside the adapter ring and supported by the adapter ring for lateral motion in contact with the contact area of the adapter ring. The rotor is mounted inside the cam ring. The adapter ring has a radial thickness that gradually increases when followed longitudinally of the adapter ring from the base portion of the first body toward the second body.

The unevenness of injection rates of cylinders is reduced in a fuel supply system of a direct injection engine which uses a variable-displacement single plunger pump. The unevenness of injection rates of cylinders can be reduced by effecting a control such that the cam , which drives the high-pressure fuel pump , makes one reciprocation, while the engine makes explosions in two cylinders, and by causing the controller to extend the injection time width of one of two injectors which inject during one discharge of the high-pressure fuel pump and to shorten the injection time width of the other injector.

A fuel supply system for a direct injection engine which has a variable capacity single cylinder plunger pump and two fuel rails. Offices are disposed at the upstream side inlets of both fuel rails, respectively. At the opposite sides to the inlet sides, the fuel rails are interconnected with each other by a connecting pipe. Using this fuel supply system, it is possible to increase a characterisitic frquency of the fuel columns, and to stabilize, suppress, and smooth out pressure pulsation in the fuel rails, thereby reducing uneven fuel injections into the cylinders. The system may have a cam which drives a plunger of a high pressure fuel pump to reciprocate once for every two combustions in two engine cylinders.

A fuel feeding apparatus includes a pressure increasing piston system, in addition to a high pressure fuel pump, for further increasing the fuel pressure at the outlet of the high pressure fuel pump. For this purpose, a first piston provided in a first cylinder is moved in response to the pressure of fuel drawn up from a fuel tank and fed to the high pressure pump by a low pressure fuel feed pump, and a second piston provided in a second cylinder and having a diameter smaller than the diameter of the first piston is connected to the first piston and is moved together with the first piston for pressurizing fuel in the second cylinder communicating with the outlet of the high pressure fuel pump at the time of engine starting, and before the high pressure fuel pump is started. The first and second pistons then are automatically returned to their initial positions, respectively, after high pressure fuel pump is started, while the pressure of the highly pressurized fuel in the high pressure fuel pipe is maintained by a high pressure regulator, by designing the first and second cylinders, including the relative sizes of the respective pistons, so that a possible maximum pressure to which the fuel is increased by the piston system is set to a value lower than a preset high pressure value to be attained by the high pressure fuel pump.

Accordingly, a circuit closing control valve has such an arrangement that its pilot chamber becomes a low pressure so that the circuit closing control valve is opened, and a lock valve having two pilot chambers connected to a circuit closing pilot valve and a circuit opening pilot valve, which are both become a low pressure, is located in a passage connecting between the pilot chamber of the circuit opening control valve and a return port. With this arrangement, if the above-mentioned abnormality occurs, the circuit closing condition is maintained unless a circuit opening instruction is delivered, and once the circuit opening operation is effected, the lock valve is opened so as to connect the pilot chamber of the circuit opening control valve to the lower pressure side so that the circuit opening control valve is left to be opened in order to disable the circuit closing operation, thereby it is possible to prevent occurrence of erroneous operation.
