For this purpose there is disclosed an apparatus for driving a display device including input means for receiving a digital value as video level for each pixel or cell of a line of the display device, reference signaling means for providing at least one reference driving signal and driving means for generating a driving signal on the basis of the digital value and the at least one reference driving signal. Each video picture is divided into at least a first type and second type of area according to the video gradient of the picture. A specific video gradient range is associated to each type. First and second sets of sub-field code words are allocated to the first and second types respectively. The second set is a subset of the first set. The pixels of the first and second types are encoded with the first and second sets of sub-field code words respectively. For at least one horizontal line of pixels including pixels of the first and second type, the area of second type is extended until the next pixel in the first type area is a pixel encoded by a sub-field code word belonging to both first and second set of sub-field code words.

The picture quality on a plasma display panel shall be improved when the contrast and/or the brightness are reduced. This is achieved by estimating the reduction of the dynamic occurring in the front-end of the data processing of the plasma display device and by compensating it in the back-end. The resulting power level information is updated on the basis of an attenuation information. The present invention relates to a new method for generating motion compensated picture by interpolating two consecutive source pictures without using motion estimator. For a given pixel to be interpolated, all displacements within a given search range between former and next frame are considered and for each displacement the displaced block difference is calculated. The pixel value is then equal to the sum of each averaged pixel pair within the search range weighted by a correlation coefficient function of the corresponding displaced block difference.

According to the invention, the motion estimation is done by using first one motion estimation in the horizontal direction and then one motion estimation in the vertical direction. For reducing the false contour effect the gravity center coding is utilized. However, a GCC with a few number of levels introduces noise in a picture. Therefore, each picture is divided into segments and such GCC is performed only in regions, where the false contour effect is critical. This is the case for skin areas of a picture. Such areas are detected by the color analysis and texture analysis. If this analysis leads to a skin area, a specific false contour mode for data processing is used. Otherwise, a standard mode is employed.

The present invention relates to a method for displaying an image in an active matrix display device and more particularly in an active matrix OLED (Organic Light Emitting Display) display. The purpose of this invention is to increase the video dynamic range of each color component. The voltages applied to the OLED cells are based on reference voltages or currents. For this purpose there is provided a driving apparatus including brightness/contrast control means for receiving video input data for modifying the video levels of the video input data in accordance with external adjustment data and for outputting modified video data. Second power measurement means measure a power level of the video input data and supply a second power level. Generator means generate a third power level comprised between the first power level and the second power level or equal to the larger one to data processing means. Thus, the number of gray levels can be increased and the picture quality improves significantly.
