Methods and apparatus for packet marking for a Hierarchical Quality of Service (HQoS) is provided to control resource sharing among a plurality of network flows with differentiated services. A packet marker at a single point (e.g., gateway) encodes the resource sharing policy for a plurality of packet flows into a single packet value. The HQoS policy is then realized by using simple PPV schedulers at the bottlenecks in the network.

A packet forwarding circuit (), such as a programmable switch or router, for example, is disposed between a control server () and one or more actuators () associated with a robotic arm (), for example. The packet forwarding circuit is configured to perform real-time velocity control of the one or more actuators in addition to other functionalities that it normally performs, such as routing, packet forwarding, and firewall protection.

A computing device () receives a packet comprised in a flow, and uses a region index table () to identify a first region of a Throughput-Value Function, TVF (), based on a flow rate of the flow. The first region is one of a plurality of sequentially ordered regions across an input domain of the TVF (). The computing device () randomly selects one of a plurality of preconfigured offset values to identify a second region of the TVF () that is lower than the first region of the TVF () by the randomly selected offset value. The computing device () determines a packet value using a TVF table () that maps each of the regions to a respective one of a plurality of packet values. The packet value is mapped to the second region. The computing device () marks the packet with the packet value mapped to the second region.

Packet processing in a computing device using multiple tables

A network node (), such as a packet marking node, efficiently measures the bitrates of incoming packets on a plurality of timescales (TSs). A throughput-value function (TVF) is then graphed to indicate the throughput-packet value relationship for that TVF. Then, starting from the longest TS and moving towards the shortest TS, the packet marking node determines () a distance between the TVFs of different TSs at the measured bitrates. To determine the packet marking, the packet marking node selects a random throughput value between 0 and the bitrate measured on the shortest TS. Depending on how the random value relates to the measured bitrates, a TVF, and the distances to add to the random value, is then selected to determine () a packet value (PV) with which to mark the packet. The packet marking node then marks () the packet according to the determined PV.
