An electric cleaner is provided with a moving mechanism for avoiding or escaping an obstacle so as to turn and move a cleaner body when the cleaning body collides with the obstacle. According to the electric cleaner, even if the cleaner body is collided with the obstacle, it is easy to escape or avoid away from the obstacle to ensure a smooth travel of the cleaner body while preventing an overturn of the cleaner.

A front side flexible member is provided along the vicinity of an opening front edge of a suction opening of a suction nozzle main body and has a plurality of opening grooves. The suction guide wall is positioned at a dent portion more than a bottom face of the suction nozzle main body. In a vacuum cleaner comprising an electric blower and a speed control unit to operate the electric blower at a variable speed, a plurality of kinds of operation control rules of the electric blower are previously stored in the speed control unit, a load current value of the electric blower is continuously detected during the cleaning and the type of the surface to be cleaned is estimated from the load current value. Thereafter, the operation control rule suitable for the estimated cleaning surface is selected from the operation control rules stored in the speed control unit and the electric blower is driven on the basis of the selected operation control rule.

An upright type electric cleaner including a main body case (1) and a suction port body (1), wherein when the main body case is brought to an upright position as the machine is inoperative, a rotary brush extending downwardly from the bottom of the suction port body (1) is released from contact with the surface to be cleaned. The suction port body includes a single switching knob which, when manipulated, enables the speed of operation of the rotary brush and the distance between the rotary brush and the surface to be cleaned to be adjusted simultaneously. A part of exhaust air of the cleaner released through a blower is led through a sound absorbing duct located in a bag compartment into a cord reel chamber to thereby greatly reduce the noise level of exhaust and preventing cord overheating of a power cord of the cleaner.
