A method for producing an experimental output satisfying an objective includes conducting an experimental execution process including applying a selection criterion to select an approach to determining a set of parameters for a set of experiments, and determining a first set of parameters for a first experiment according to the selected approach based on one or more of (i) a predicted relationship between a set of parameters and a characteristic of a corresponding experimental output, (ii) the measured characteristic of a second experimental output from a second experiment executed according to a second set of parameters, (iii) the objective, and (iv) a parameter selection rule. Conducting an experimental execution process includes controlling execution of the first set of experiments according to the first set of parameters, where execution of each first experiment includes conducting the experiment according to the first set of parameters to produce a first experimental output; and measuring the characteristic of the first experimental output. The method includes determining whether the objective is satisfied by the experimental execution process, and, when the objective is not satisfied by the experimental execution process, conducting a subsequent experimental execution process.

Experimental discovery processes

Methods, systems, and apparatus for performing convolutional computations using an optical system. In some aspects computations for a neural network are performed in a digital domain using electronic circuitry, the neural network including a convolutional layer. Input data for the convolutional layer of the neural network is obtained, and a convolution or correlation computation on the input data in an analog domain using an optical correlator module is performed to generate an optical correlator module output. Based on the optical correlator module output, data is processed through additional layers of the neural network in the digital domain using the electronic circuitry.

Optical processing system

The disclosure provides for a system that includes a plurality of stations equipped for free-space optical communications (FSOC) in a network and a central control system. At least one station in the plurality of stations includes a wavelength selectable switch, an OEO module, and one or more first processors. The one or more first processors are configured to control the wavelength selectable switch, process an electrical signal that is extracted using the OEO module, and communicate with the central control system. The central control system includes one or more second processors that are configured to receive data regarding FSOC communication conditions at the plurality of stations, determine a path between stations through the network based on the received data, and transmit instructions to the plurality of stations.

Free-space optical communications network

In some embodiments, techniques are provided for analyzing the manufacturability or fabricability of objects based on segmented designs. In some embodiments, a scanning device scans a manufacturing device and/or an object manufactured by the manufacturing device to characterize a manufacturing capability of the manufacturing device. A paintbrush pattern may be determined based on the characterization, and a proposed design may be determined to be fabricable or non-fabricable using the paintbrush pattern.

Systems and methods for analyzing manufacturability of three-dimensional designs

An apparatus includes a holder to support an indenter relative to a sample, a depth sensor, and a controller. The operations include applying a first force on the sample with the indenter and determining a first depth of the indenter based on data generated by the sensor, moving the indenter from the first depth to a greater predetermined depth, then applying the first force on the sample with the indenter and determining a second depth of the indenter based on second data generated by the sensor, and determining a value indicative of hardness of the sample based on a difference between the first depth and the second depth. The apparatuses described can use a single scale for hardness that enables hardness values for different materials to be compared to one another.

Hardness testing system using multiple depth measurements and related methods

A transient electronic device includes electronic elements (e.g., an SOI- or chip-based IC) and a trigger mechanism disposed on a frangible glass substrate. The trigger mechanism includes a switch that initiates a large trigger current through a self-limiting resistive element in response to a received trigger signal. The self-limiting resistive element includes a resistor portion that generates heat in response to the trigger current, thereby rapidly increasing the temperature of a localized (small) region of the frangible glass substrate, and a current limiting portion (e.g., a fuse) that self-limits (terminates) the trigger current after a predetermined amount of time, causing the localized region to rapidly cool down. The frangible glass substrate is engineered such that a stress profile produced by the rapid heating/cooling of the localized region generates an initial fracture force that subsequently propagates throughout the glass substrate, whereby sufficient potential energy is released to powderize the electronic elements.

Self-limiting electrical triggering for initiating fracture of frangible glass

A method and a device for measuring a fluid flow characteristic of an ambient fluid and modifying fluid flow of the ambient fluid, the method including: applying a first voltage between a first electrode and a second electrode, the first voltage being sufficient to generate a plasma in the first space; applying a second voltage between the first electrode and a third electrode, the second voltage being sufficient to generate a plasma in the second space; measuring a first current between the first and second electrodes, and a second current between the first and third electrodes; determining a fluid flow characteristic of the ambient fluid; and applying a third voltage between the first and second electrodes, the third voltage being sufficient to generate a plasma in the first space sufficient to modify fluid flow of the ambient fluid in the first direction in the first space.

Method and apparatus for combined anemometer and plasma actuator

In some implementations, a method includes receiving, by one or more processing devices configured to control a traffic signal at an intersection of roads, camera data providing images of the intersection, the processing devices being located proximate to the intersection, using one or more local machine learning models to identify objects at the intersection and paths of the objects based on the camera data, providing traffic data generated from outputs of the one or more local machine learning models to a remote traffic planning system over a network, receiving, from the remote traffic planning system, a remote instruction for the traffic signal determined using one or more remote machine learning models, and providing a control instruction to the traffic signal at the intersection that is determined based on (i) the remote instruction from the remote traffic planning system, and (ii) a local instruction generated by the processing devices.

Dynamic traffic control

An electromechanical transducer apparatus is disclosed and includes a housing. A static portion is substantially immobilized within the housing and includes a magnetic flux generator for generating magnetic flux, a pair of pole pieces for coupling magnetic flux through at least one of a first magnetic circuit and a second magnetic circuit, and a coil disposed to electromagnetically interact with one of the magnetic circuits. The static portion is thermally coupled to the housing via a low thermal resistance path to permit removal of heat. A movable portion includes first and second closing pieces separated from the pole pieces by first and second gaps. The closing pieces are mechanically coupled and supported for reciprocating motion about an equilibrium position which varies the gaps to cause a variation in magnetic reluctance in each of the first and second magnetic circuits.

Electromechanical transducer apparatus for converting between mechanical energy and electrical energy

One embodiment of the present invention provides an energy-asset control system for utilizing an energy asset to provide one of more modes of operation services. The system includes an economic optimizer configured to identify at least one mode of operation opportunity based on current and/or future market conditions; a prognostics module configured to perform a prognostic analysis associated with the mode of operation opportunity for the energy asset using an existing model, and determine a confidence level associated with the prognostic analysis; and an operation controller. The economic optimizer is further to configured to, in response to the prognostics module determining the confidence level exceeding a predetermined threshold, determine an expected profit of the mode of operation opportunity based on outcomes of the prognostic analysis; and optimize, over a predetermined time period, a usage of the energy asset based on the expected profit of the mode of operation opportunity.

Strategic modeling for economic optimization of grid-tied energy assets

A centralized server-based system and method for managing and reserving parking spaces capable of charging an EV, that is, a plug-in hybrid or fully electric vehicle, treats sets of parking spaces as interchangeable pooled resources. An EV motorist can book a reservation with charging of the EV by specifying parking in a desired location. Parking spaces serve dual uses for parking alone or parking with charging. The parking spaces are handled as a common parking pool, such as on one side of a city block, and each space has equal access to a charging station. The server determines charging capacity availability within a time window and the motorist can choose a parking time up to or beyond, if permitted, the maximum charging time needed to charge the EV. Non-EV motorists can similarly reserve parking within a parking pool with the server ensuring optimal use of charging capacity and parking spaces.
