In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a process for forming an electrically conductive layer is disclosed comprising (i) intercalating colloidal vanadium oxide with a water soluble vinyl-containing polymer, (ii) incorporating the intercalated colloidal vanadium oxide in a coating composition, and (iii) coating the coating composition on a substrate. In accordance with a second embodiment of the invention, a composition for forming an electrically conductive element or layer thereof is disclosed comprising (i) colloidal vanadium oxide intercalated with a water soluble vinyl-containing polymer and (ii) a binder which is distinct from the water soluble vinyl-containing polymer. Intercalation of vanadium oxide gels with water-soluble polymeric species in accordance with of the present invention results in a vanadium oxide gel having improved solution stability and reduced impact of solution aging on conductivity.

In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, an imaging element is disclosed comprising:(i) a support; (ii) at least one image forming layer; and (iii) an electrically-conductive layer comprising colloidal vanadium oxide intercalated with a water soluble vinyl-containing polymer. The electrically-conductive layer preferably additionally comprises a film-forming binder, which is distinct from the water soluble vinyl-containing polymer. The water soluble vinyl-containing polymer is preferably poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol or an interpolymer thereof. Intercalation of vanadium oxide gels with water-soluble polymeric species in accordance with the present invention results in a vanadium oxide gel having improved solution stability and reduced impact of solution aging on conductivity, which improves manufacturing robustness and enables the use of many polymeric binders which could not be effectively used with conventional vanadium oxide gels in conductive layers of imaging elements.

In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, an imaging element is disclosed comprising: (i) a support; (ii) at least one image forming layer; (iii) a transparent magnetic recording layer comprising magnetic particles dispersed in a first film-forming binder; and (iv) an electrically-conductive layer comprising colloidal vanadium oxide intercalated with a water soluble vinyl-containing polymer dispersed in a second film-forming binder. The water soluble vinyl-containing polymer is preferably poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone, polyvinyl alcohol or an interpolymer thereof. Intercalation of colloidal vanadium oxide with water soluble vinyl-containing polymers results in improved stability of coating formulations, and an improved colloidal vanadium oxide which is compatible with a wider selection of polymeric binders and facilitates higher binder:vanadium oxide ratios which can improve adhesion of a transparent magnetic layer.

The present invention is an imaging element including a support, at least one imaging layer, and an antistat layer. The antistatic layer includes an antistatic agent dispersed in a polyolefin binder.

Antistatic compositions for imaging elements

Electrically conductive elements, such as imaging elements, can be prepared by applying electrically conductive coating compositions to a suitable support. The coating compositions include a polyaniline-protonic counter-ion complex in a first solvent that has certain Hansen solubility parameters, and a film-forming binder in a second common coating solvent. The total solids in the coating composition is less than or equal to about 10 weight %, and the weight ratio of the binder to the complex is at least about 1:1. Under these formulation conditions, the polyaniline protonic counter-ion complex is solubilized, rather than being in dispersed form, and is readily applied to form a thin, relatively transparent, electrically conductive film. Antistatic layers of photographic elements can be prepared in this manner.

The imaging material can be a photographic material, especially a heat-developable photographic material containing, for example, a photosensitive metal salt other than the Te(II) material or other sources of developable nuclei.
