A tracer particle for determining the concentration of a microingredient in a bulk material is disclosed. The tracer particle comprises a finely divided ferromagnetic particulate material approximately 90% of which is approximately 325 mesh or smaller, a microingredient and a binder wherein the microingredient and ferromagnetic material are entrapped in the binder and wherein the tracer particle is approximately 35 to 80 mesh in size.

Finely divided iron is mechanically mixed in water to add a coating to the iron particles. Present in the water to protect the iron from corrosion loss during such processing is a small amount of sodium carbonate or tri-sodium phosphate or sodium silicate. The inhibitor is adsorbed on the eventual iron particles after the water is driven off.

Protected iron tracer composition and method of making

A dry homogeneous admixture including a bulk material, a micro-ingredient, and a solid particulate tracer in a preselected ratio to the micro-ingredient, comprising a vehicle of ground iron or other ferromagnetic material that will become magnetized by a magnetic field, but loses its magnetism in the absence of such a field. The vehicle itself serves as the tracer when used with magnetic detection techniques. Additional tracers are provided by coating the vehicle with detectable coatings such as dyes.

Tracer-containing composition

Tracer material formed of a finely powdered reduced iron carrier having adsorbed thereon sodium selenite or sodium selenate.
