Methods are provided for using a dewaxing catalyst formed using at least two structure directing agents for production of a lubricant base stock. For example, ZSM-48 crystals formed using multiple directing agents (and/or formulated catalysts made using such crystals) can have an increased activity and/or can provide an improved yield during catalytic production of lubricant base stocks. Additionally or alternately, ZSM-48 crystals formed using multiple directing agents (and/or formulated catalysts made using such crystals) can provide improved aromatic saturation during processing of a feed for lubricant base stock production.

The ability to process feedstocks under higher sulfur conditions allows for reduced cost processing and increases the flexibility in selecting a suitable feedstock. The sour feed can be delivered to a catalytic dewaxing step without any separation of sulfur and nitrogen contaminants, or a high pressure separation can be used to partially eliminate contaminants.

A dewaxing catalyst is selectively activated by treatment with an oxygenate. Selective activation is accomplished by treated the dewaxing catalyst with a carrier feed containing oxygenate. The selectively activated dewaxing catalyst when used to dewax waxy hydrocarbons results in improved yield of isomerate at equivalent pour point over a dewaxing catalyst which has not been oxygenate treated.

Catalyst for wax isomerate yield enhancement by oxygenate pretreatment

A waxy hydrocarbon feed is catalytically dewaxed with a catalyst that has been selectively activated. The selective activation of the catalyst involves contacting the dewaxing catalyst with a feed mixture containing waxy hydrocarbon and at least one oxygenate. The process results in improved catalyst performance resulting in improved yield of isomerate at equivalent pour.
