A degassing launder having a plurality of partition plates configured to block a flow of molten aluminum and including a plurality of domes. Two adjacent partition plates and two side walls of the launder form a degassing chamber. A lower portion of the partition plates is provided with a passage through which the molten aluminum flows into a next degassing chamber. The domes are arranged on the bottom of the launder.

An AI system is adapted to receive at least one parameter to be optimized for an article or its production. The AI system processes the to-be-optimized parameter and generates an operating condition for a first phase of production. The AI system processes the operating condition, and generates an AI operating parameter for processing the aluminum. The production equipment associated with the first phase processes the aluminum accordingly, wherein there is an operating parameter for obtaining aluminum having an optimized quality characteristic at the end of the first phase, and wherein having the production equipment performing the AI parameter generates a deviation. Through the deviations over the different phases, the general production is prioritized over the phases of productions.

Aluminum manufacturing process with retroaction loop

A control pin for controlling the flow of molten metal through a down spout in a casting process is provided. The control pin comprises a body having an elongated shape, a lower portion insertable in the down spout, and a terminal end, opposite the lower portion. The body includes a central core, preferably a hollow tube or a rod of alumina or mullite; a heating element disposed around the central core, and an intermediate layer surrounding the central core and encasing the heating element, the intermediate layer being made of a solidified ceramic putty. Finally, an outer shell, preferably made of woven fiber reinforcing fabric in a matrix of ceramic, surrounds the intermediate layer.

Heated control pin

A receptacle for handling molten metal is provided. The receptacle has bottom and side walls and includes a refractory defining a cavity within which the molten metal is conveyed or contained. The receptacle has at least one channel extending within at least one of its walls. The channel has an inlet and an outlet. The inlet is connectable to a source for circulating a fluid within the channel. The outlet allows the fluid to be expelled from said channel. The channel allows, when the fluid is circulated in it, to regulate the temperature of the refractory and thereby of the metal conveyed or contained. A casting assembly and a method for casting the refractory are also provided.

Receptacle for handling molten metal, casting assembly and manufacturing method

A method for the purification of a metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum and aluminum alloys, wherein the metal is in a liquid phase and is contacted with a salt flux consisting of a binary mixture of NaCl and MgCl. Preferably, more than 22% by weight of the binary mixture consists of NaCl.

Disclosed is a free flowing dry back-up material which comprises: This material which is useful in particular in the aluminum industry has the advantages of being water free and free flowing, such avoiding the use of vibrator to position it into a shell. It also has a low density and a low thermal conductivity. Moreover, it is organic free as compared to the existing materials which use an organic binder to ensure a low temperature set; and it sets at a temperature lower than 400&#xb0; F.

Free flowing dry back-up insulating material

An integral molten metal casting device comprising: a crossfeeder having an interior surface defining a partial cylinder of a first diameter; a generally cylindrical thimble having an interior surface of a second smaller diameter; and back-up insulation; all formed as a single monolithic structure with the crossfeeder interior surface and the thimble interior surface comprising a continuous, joint free and uninterrupted cylinder insert surface of a thin layer or multiple layers of fiber reinforced low thermal expansion coefficient, high wear resistant material. According to certain preferred embodiments, the thin layer or layers comprise fused silica, alumina or zirconia, and mixtures of these materials with other similar materials such as silicon carbide. Monolithic integrally formed molten metal handling systems of similar structure are also described.

Molten metal handling apparatus

A metal distribution system for the simultaneous production of a plurality of logs or round billets from molten metal comprising: 1) a trough for the introduction of molten metal; 2) a plurality of side streams extending from the trough and each of the side streams including a plurality of opposing apertures each of the apertures including a thimble for the shaping of molten metal passing through the trough and the side streams and into the thimbles. A uniform flow of molten metal into the side streams and the individual apertures is provided by the controlled negative angular orientation of the most upstream opposing pair of apertures thereby providing relative uniformity of the temperature of molten metal reaching each of the plurality of apertures. A unique unitized thimble configuration and trough damming arrangement are also described.

Casting apparatus

There is provided a filtration and distribution device for a molten metal, which is in the form of a bag having parts made of a solid heat-resistant fabric and open areas made of an open weave heat-resistant fabric. At least some of the parts made of the solid heat-resistant fabric are replaced by rigid parts made of a moldable or thermo-formable composite consisting of an open weave heat-resistant fabric embedded into a matrix made of a heat-resistant inorganic material compatible with the open weave heat-resistant fabric. Preferably, the open weave heat-resistant fabric forming the open areas of the bag, is made of yarns that are rigidified and protected by application thereto of a heat-resistant coating. This coating is preferably made of a heat-resistant inorganic material applied by spraying or dipping after the yarns are weaved. The rigidification can be achieved naturally or by thermal treatment. There is also provided a distribution device for a molten metal, which comprises a hollow body provided with an outlet connectable to a molten metal feed pipe and at least one outlet through which the molten metal fed into the body may escape. This hollow body is made of the very same moldable and thermo-formable composite already mentioned hereinabove.

Molten metal filtration and distribution device and method for manufacturing the same

Apparatus for and a method of measuring the temperature of molten aluminum or aluminum alloys. The apparatus comprises a temperature measuring device, usually a thermocouple, contained within a protective tubular sheath, the sheath enclosing the temperature measuring device at least to a point above the point of maximum immersion in molten aluminum during use of the apparatus. The sheath comprises at least one inner layer closed at one end, and an outer layer, the outer layer being made of steel or cast iron, and the inner layer being made of a continuous refractory material. The outer layer and the at least one inner layer are free of discontinuous (refractory) refractory materials between them. The continuous refractory material may be, for example, a carbon fiber-reinforced carbon or graphite fiber-reinforced calcium silicate refractory, and is resistant to failure in, i.e. penetration by, molten aluminum or aluminum alloy. The apparatus is long-lived and durable and does not contaminate the molten metal when it fails.

Method and apparatus for measurement of temperatures of molten aluminum

The present invention is concerned with a process for the preparation of sintered calcium aluminates that can generally be used as a protective cover for liquid metals, and particularly steel, and the process comprising the steps of mixing calcium oxide, or its precursor, particles and aluminum dross residue, such as NOVAL.TM.; calcining the resulting mixture; maintaining a calcining temperature of 1200.degree. C. or higher for approximately 5 minutes or more which is sufficient to form a friable sintered product rich in calcium aluminates; and recovering the sintered product after cooling. Optionally, calcium fluoride, or other fluoride can be added to the starting mixture, if it is not already contained in the dross residue.

Process for the preparation of calcium aluminates from aluminum dross

A method of recovering an aluminum-containing metal from a scrap material containing the metal and an organic contaminant, such as paper, plastics, lacquer, paint or oil. The method involves creating a fluidized bed of solid particles, maintaining a zone of the bed at a temperature in the range of the melting point of the metal to 1000.degree. C., introducing the scrap material into the fluidized zone to cause decoating of the metal within a time in the range of 1 to 40 seconds, at least partially melting the metal, and removing the metal material from the fluidized bed. In this way, decoating and at least partial melting is achieved essentially at the same time for improved efficiency. Metals of different melting point may also be separated from each other by providing a series of temperature zones in the fluidized bed (or in a series of fluidized beds) of progressively increasing temperature. If a limited amount of oxygen is introduced into the bed, a combustible gas is produced that can be burned to extract its energy or can be stored for later use.
