There is provided a method and system for operating a turboprop engine of an aircraft. When a resulting value for Ng is between at least one upper limit and at least one lower limit, the output power is governed as a function of the target power. When the resulting value for Ng is on or outside of the at least one upper limit and the at least one lower limit, the output power is governed as a function of the maximum Ng and the minimum Ng.

System and method for operating a turboprop engine

An aircraft engine has an exhaust duct receiving an engine gas flow and a heat exchanger duct having a wall extending from an inlet receiving a cooling air flow to an outlet connected to the exhaust duct. A heat exchanger is disposed in the heat exchanger duct between the inlet and outlet. A diverted airflow pathway in the heat exchanger duct includes first and second plates extending inwardly in the heat exchanger duct from first and second positions on an inner surface of the wall to plate distal ends, the plate distal ends extending past one another in a direction transverse to the wall. A valve in the wall selectively fluidly connects the heat exchanger duct to an evacuation location and is movable between closed and open positions during operating and shutdown conditions of the engine to fluidly disconnect and connect the heat exchanger duct to the evacuation location.

Engine exhaust reverse flow prevention

An aircraft engine reservoir system includes a reservoir inner chamber containing a flammable fluid. A chamber inlet is fluidly connectable to a flammable fluid source pressurizing the fluid. The chamber includes an outlet. An air source operates at a pressure that is lower that a flammable fluid pressure during an engine operational condition. A valve selectively fluidly connecting the chamber to the air source is movable between a closed position, in which the chamber flammable fluid pressure acting on the valve exceeds the air source pressure acting on the valve such that the valve blocks the air from entering the chamber, and an open position, in which the chamber flammable fluid pressure acting on the valve is lower than the air source pressure acting on the valve such that the valve allows the air to flow into the chamber and evacuate the flammable fluid from the chamber through the outlet.

Flammable fluid reservoir

An aircraft engine comprises an exhaust duct receiving an engine gas flow at a first pressure during an operating condition and at a second, lower pressure at shutdown. A heat exchanger duct connected to the exhaust duct has a heat exchanger disposed therein. A cover in the heat exchanger duct includes a closure movable between open and closed positions to fluidly connect or disconnect the heat exchanger duct to the exhaust duct. A biasing member disposed in the exhaust duct, exposed to the gas flow, and operatively connected to the closure biases the closure toward the closed position with a biasing force. First and second forces opposing the biasing force are generated on the biasing member by the gas flow at the first and second pressures, the first being greater than the second. The biasing force is greater than the second force and less than the first force.

A cover system selectively allows a gas flow through a heat exchanger duct upstream of an exhaust duct in an aircraft engine. A fluid is at a first pressure during an engine operating condition and a second pressure lower than the first during shutdown. A plate extends across the heat exchanger duct with aperture(s) extending therethrough. A closure is movable between an open position with gas flowing through the apertures into the exhaust duct, and a closed position with the closure closing the apertures. A biasing member operatively connected to the closure closes the closure with a biasing force. During the engine operating condition, the first pressure creates a first force acting against and greater than the biasing force to urge the closure open. At shutdown, the second pressure creates a second force acting against and lower than the biasing force, the biasing force biasing the closure closed.

A gas turbine engine according to a first embodiment, having a case; a core within the case; an exhaust nozzle that is fluidly coupled to the case; a duct having a duct outlet that is fluidly coupled to the exhaust nozzle and a duct body extending from the duct outlet to a duct inlet; an air/oil cooler having an airflow outlet disposed at the duct inlet and a cooler body extending from the airflow outlet to an airflow inlet; and an airflow control baffle disposed at one of: the duct inlet; the duct outlet; and the airflow inlet of the cooler, wherein the airflow control baffle is configured to open when oil temperature in the engine is above a first threshold and close when the oil temperature is below a second threshold that is lower than the first threshold.

An aircraft engine includes a core gas path through which a core gas flow flows, an exhaust duct receiving the core gas flow, an air-cooled heat exchanger disposed in a heat exchanger duct having an air inlet providing cooling air to the air-cooled heat exchanger and an air outlet in fluid communication with the exhaust duct, and a cover disposed in the heat exchanger duct downstream of the air-cooled heat exchanger. The cover is movable between an open position, in which the cover allows the cooling air to flow through the air outlet into the exhaust duct, and a closed position, in which the cover substantially blocks the air outlet. The cover is operable to move from the open position to the closed position at a predetermined temperature of the cover.

An intake device for a gas turbine engine includes a snorkel and a particle separator. The snorkel is configured to be mounted to a panel defining at least a portion of a gas flow path within the gas turbine engine. The snorkel includes a tubular body extending between a closed end and an open end opposite the closed end. The snorkel further includes an inlet aperture formed through the tubular body adjacent the closed end. At least a portion of the snorkel is configured to be disposed within the gas flow path. The particle separator is mounted to the snorkel downstream of the inlet aperture. The particle separator includes at least one gas flow passage extending between a flow inlet and a flow outlet. The at least one gas flow passage is configured to remove particulate matter from the at least one gas flow passage upstream of the flow outlet.

Apparatus for removing particulate matter from bleed gas and gas turbine engine including same

A gas turbine engine includes an intake device. The intake device includes a snorkel and a filter case. The snorkel includes a tubular body and an inlet aperture. The tubular body extends between a closed end and an open end opposite the closed end. The inlet aperture is formed through the tubular body proximate the closed end. The tubular body forms a first portion of a gas flow path for a bleed gas from the inlet aperture to the open end. The filter case is connected to the tubular body. The filter case extends between a first end and a second end. The filter case includes a sidewall extending from the first end to the second end. The sidewall surrounds a filter cavity. The filter case is configured to receive the bleed gas from the open end of the tubular body. The filter case and the snorkel form a unitary component.

Apparatus for removing particulate matter from bleed gas

An intake device for a gas turbine engine includes a snorkel and a housing. The snorkel includes a tubular body and an inlet aperture. The tubular body extends between a closed end and an open end opposite the closed end. The inlet aperture is formed through the tubular body proximate the closed end. The housing is mounted to the snorkel. The housing includes an inner wall, an outer wall, a side wall, a settling chamber, and an outlet tube. The inner wall is adjacent the snorkel. The outer wall is opposite the inner wall. The side wall extends from the inner wall to the outer wall. The settling chamber is within the side wall between the inner wall and the outer wall. The settling chamber is fluidly coupled with the open end. The outlet tube extends through the housing from the settling chamber to an exterior of the housing.

Methods and systems for starting an engine are provided. A cold-start request to start the engine in a first operating condition associated with a predetermined engine temperature range is obtained. In response to obtaining the cold-start request, an amount of boost fuel to provide to the engine is determined, based on at least one second operating condition of the engine. The engine is started by supplementing a baseline fuel flow to the engine with the amount of boost fuel.

Methods and systems for slowing down an aircraft having a propeller. The method comprises operating the propeller at a reference speed with the propeller blades in a first position, applying a load to the propeller to slow down a rotational speed of the propeller when the propeller is in a windmilling state or just before the propeller enters the windmilling state, adjusting the propeller blades to a second position in response to the load being applied, to increase the rotational speed of the propeller back towards the reference speed, and operating the propeller at the reference speed with the propeller blades in the second position.

Methods and systems for operating a gas turbine engine are described. The method comprises obtaining, at a control system associated with the gas turbine engine, a measured engine core speed and an actual power demand for the gas turbine engine during operation thereof, determining an expected engine core speed based on the actual power demand from a predicted relationship between engine core speed and engine output power, comparing the measured engine core speed to the expected engine core speed, detecting a torque-related fault when the measured engine core speed differs from the expected engine core speed by more than a threshold; and accommodating the torque-related fault when detected.

System and method for detecting and accommodating a loss of torque on a gas turbine engine

Systems and methods for controlling fuel flow to an engine during start are provided. Fuel is caused to be injected into a combustor of the engine according to a first fuel schedule defining a minimum fuel flow limit required to achieve light-off of the engine, the minimum fuel flow limit set at an initial value. Following light-off of the engine, at least one operating parameter of the engine is monitored. Based on the at least one operating parameter, occurrence of flameout in the engine is detected. In response to detecting occurrence of flameout in the engine, the minimum fuel flow limit is increased from the initial value to a first value to obtain an adjusted fuel schedule, and fuel is caused to be injected into the combustor according to the adjusted fuel schedule.

Fuel flow control system and method for engine start

Herein provided are methods and systems for detecting a high temperature condition of a gas turbine engine. A fuel flow to a combustor of the engine and a compressor outlet pressure of the engine are obtained. A ratio of the fuel flow to the compressor outlet pressure is determined. The ratio is compared to a threshold and a high temperature condition of the engine is detected when the ratio exceeds the threshold.
