A self-sufficient rotary steerable system configured to provide a bottom hole assembly with a build-up rate of at least 25 degrees per 100 feet of drilling distance. The rotary steerable system has a reduced length without the removal or omission of functional components, including a power module, a control module, a communication module, a filter module, a valve module, and/or a pressure regulation module. The build-up rate is defined as a function of a length between a first contact point on a drill bit of the bottom hole assembly and a second contact point at a piston assembly of the rotary steerable system; length between the second contact point and a third contact point at a stabilizer of the rotary steerable system; the drill bit outer diameter; the piston assembly outer diameter; and the stabilizer outer diameter.

Self-contained compact rotary steerable system

A rotary steerable system including a steering section and a control section. The control section includes a modular control system that is field detachable from a remainder of the control section. The modular control system includes one or more modules that are field detachable from the other modules and a remainder of the modular control system. Examples of the modules of the modular control system include a power module configured to generate electrical power or electromagnetic field rotation from hydraulic power, a control module configured to control actuation of one or more pistons in the steering section, and/or a flow control module configured to selectively allow fluid flow into one or more distribution channels leading to the one or more pistons of the steering unit.

Modular rotary steerable system

A fluid-activated shifting tool includes a fluid entry valve, a piston, a fluid pressure chamber and a relief pressure chamber. The piston can shift and provide a force relative to the toolstring using the pressure differential created between the pressure within the fluid pressure chamber compared to the pressure within the relief pressure chamber. The fluid entry valve provides a temporary fluid entry barrier between the well fluid and the fluid pressure chamber. At a selected depth within the wellbore, the fluid entry valve can be actuated, providing well fluid hydrostatic pressure inside the fluid pressure chamber. The shifting force of the piston can be used to acuate or set a plug within a tubing string of the wellbore.

Method and apparatus for fluid-activated shifting tool to actuate a plug assembly

A method for calibrating the sensors present within a drilling tool, whereby the calibration occurs downhole and in-situ within the drilling tool. The calibration method may use the rotation of the drilling tool which typically occurs during drilling operations, whereby the drilling tool is rotating along the axis which follows the drilling trajectory. Direction and speed of rotation of the drilling tool may contribute to the in-situ calibration of the sensors, which may include angular rate sensors, magnetometers, and accelerometers.

Method and apparatus for the downhole in-situ calibration of angular rate sensors and magnetometers

A rotary steerable system including a steering section having at least one piston, at least one distribution flow passage extending from a valve to one of the pistons, and two main flow passages bypassing the pistons. At least a portion of each main flow passage is closer to a central point of the steering section than an outer boundary of the distribution flow passage. At least a portion of each main flow passage may also be closer to the central point of the steering section than an inner boundary of the pistons in a retracted position. The distribution flow passages are contained within a central area, with a ratio of a central area diameter to steering section diameter being 0.5 or less, preferably 0.4 or less. The steering section may include two piston sets and two distribution flow passages each extending from the valve to a piston.

Rotary steerable system with central distribution passages

A rotary steerable system including a steering section having not more than one piston or not more than two pistons in a transverse cross-sectional plane of the steering section. The steering section includes two distribution flow passages each extending from a valve to a piston. A ratio of a distribution flow passage diameter to steering section diameter is at least 0.07. The distribution flow passages are contained within a central area of the steering section, with a ratio of a central area diameter to steering section diameter being 0.5 or less, preferably 0.4 or less. The steering section may include two pistons having center points that are separated by an angle greater than 120 degrees, preferably about 180 degrees. A duration for which only one of the sets of pistons is activated is greater than 110 degrees of rotation of a valve rotor, preferably greater than 150 degrees.

Dual piston rotary steerable system

The present invention provides a chemical heater for use in down-hole operations together with methods for operating such in oil/gas wells. The chemical heater comprises a heater body () housing a chemical reaction heat source material (). The heater body () has a leading end that, in use, is deployed down-hole first. The heater is provided with ignition means (), located in a heating zone proximal to the leading end of the heater body, for triggering a chemical reaction in the chemical reaction heat source material located in the heating zone (). The heater is further provided with an actuator () housed within the heater body () and configured to urge the chemical reaction heat source material () towards the heating zone so as to generate a focused heating pattern.

Down-hole chemical heater and methods of operating such

The present invention provides a thermally deformable annular packer with pressure relief means for use in oil and gas wells. The annular packer is formed from a stack of component parts, said parts comprising one or more eutectic alloy based ring sections sandwiched between two end sections. At least one of the annular packer component parts has one or more enclosed voids that are configured to become exposed when the packer is subjected to a predetermined pressure or temperature. The exposure of the enclosed voids serves to increase the effective volume within the sealed region formed by the annular packer in the annulus between two coaxial well casing/tubing. The increase in the effective volume serves to reduce the pressure within the sealed region thus preventing a build-up of pressure that might otherwise have damaged the well casing/tubing.

Thermally deformable annular packers

An untethered sensing object able to sense and record well fluid and wellbore parameters. The untethered sensing object is adapted to perform, in addition, a well fluid isolation with a plugging element previously placed inside the wellbore.

The present invention provides a method of sealing a region of a sand screen of an Open Hole Gravel Pack without the need to perforate the sand screen and a tool for use in such. The tool being a eutectic/bismuth based alloy well plugging/sealing tool () having a tubular heater body () with an internal cavity () capable of receiving a chemical heat source (). The tool is provided with a quantity of eutectic/bismuth based alloy () around an outer surface of the heater body () such that it can be heated by the chemical heat source (). In addition the tool () has an insulating sleeve () provided around an outer surface of the alloy (), wherein the sleeve () is configured to provide a focused egress for the alloy () as it is melted by the chemical heat source ().

Downhole operations relating to open hole gravel packs and tools for use therein

An untethered sensing object able to sense and record well fluid and wellbore parameters. The untethered sensing object is adapted to transmit recorded data towards a communication module of a toolstring, whereas the toolstring is conveyed from surface and reaches a proximity distance with the untethered sensing object inside the well fluid of a wellbore. The untethered sensing object includes at least one sensor, an acquisition module, a recording module and a transmitting module.

A configuration for testing fluid with a single packer includes at least one sample inlet and at least one guard inlet surrounding a periphery of the at least one sample inlet, wherein the at least one sample inlet has at least one side that is parallel to another side of the at least one sample inlet and the at least one sample inlet has at least two rounded ends connecting each of the parallel sides, and the at least one guard inlet has at least one side that is parallel to another side of the at least one guard inlet and the at least one guard inlet has at least two rounded ends connecting each of the parallel side of the guard inlet.

Single packer inlet configurations

Formation testing which may involve circulating mud in a pipe string from a mud pit through a port in the pipe string to a downhole diverter sub, wherein the pipe string is suspended in a wellbore extending into a subterranean formation, operating a downhole pump to pump formation fluid from the formation, wherein the formation fluid comprises gas, and mixing the pumped formation fluid with circulated mud such that a proportion of the pumped formation gas in the circulated mud is maintained below a threshold value.
