A control-module implemented method for controlling a powertrain system comprising an internal combustion engine, at least one electric machine, a high-voltage battery and an electro-mechanical transmission operative to transmit torque to a driveline includes monitoring a state of charge (SOC) of a high-voltage battery configured to provide stored electrical power to a first electric machine, a second electric machine and at least one auxiliary load. A trickle-charging event is enabled only when the SOC of the high-voltage battery is less than a first SOC threshold. The trickle-charging event activates the first clutch coupled to a first planetary gear set. The trickle-charging event further coordinates a torque capacity of the activated first clutch and a charging set of torque commands between the engine, the first electric machine and the second electric machine to establish a net zero output torque condition.

Method to allow trickle-charging on a strong hybrid vehicle to balance accessory loads

A powertrain system includes an internal combustion engine, a first electric machine and an electro-mechanical transmission operative to transmit torque to a driveline. A method for controlling the powertrain system in the presence of a controlled neutral operation of the electro-mechanical transmission being selected includes monitoring vehicle speed, and only when the monitored vehicle speed is indicative of a low-speed zone restricting a transition from a current engine operating state.

A method is provided to detect the presence of hydraulic line pressure in a hydraulic control system in an electromechanical transmission. The method includes determining an estimated hydraulic line pressure of the hydraulic control system based upon an input flow and an output flow of hydraulic fluid. The input flow and output flow are regulated with a pressure control device, which is energizable on operator demand. A pressure detection device is fluidly connected to the pressure control device to detect the presence of hydraulic pressure. An override module is applied to the estimated hydraulic line pressure to determine a corrected hydraulic line pressure. The override module sets the corrected hydraulic line pressure to predetermined values based on the operating state indicated by the pressure detection device. The override module corrects for an over-estimation of hydraulic line pressure in operating conditions such as low environmental temperatures.

Method and apparatus to detect the presence of hydraulic pressure in a transmission

A method to operate a clutch device in an electro-mechanical transmission mechanically-operatively coupled to an internal combustion engine and at least one electric machine includes, in response to a failure condition detected within a flow control device configured to facilitate flow of hydraulic fluid for operating the clutch device, selectively preventing the flow of hydraulic fluid from entering the flow control device and feeding the clutch device. Synchronization of the clutch device is initiated when the clutch device is intended for activation, and only if the clutch device is synchronized, the flow of hydraulic fluid is selectively permitted to enter the flow control device to activate the clutch device.

Method for use of hydraulically or electrically controlled solenoids under failed on conditions

An exemplary system includes a hydraulic device configured to operate at a fluid pressure. A sensor is configured to measure fluid pressure in the hydraulic device and generate a pressure signal representative of the measured fluid pressure. An actuator configured to regulate fluid flow to the hydraulic device. A control module is configured to identify a fault pending condition based on the measured fluid pressure, increase the fluid pressure in the hydraulic device during the fault pending condition, and iteratively enable and disable the actuator during the fault pending condition to determine if the actuator has failed.

System and method of managing line pressure in a vehicle during a fault pending condition

A vehicle includes a pump configured to output fluid at a commanded pressure when driven by a motor. A first hydraulic device is operably connected to the pump and configured to operate in response to receiving fluid at a first pressure. A second hydraulic device is operably connected to the pump and configured to execute a shift command in response to receiving fluid at a second pressure. A control processor is configured to control the commanded pressure in accordance with a priority scheme. That is, the control processor is configured to direct at least a portion of the commanded pressure from the first hydraulic device to the second hydraulic device for a duration of a shift command based on the priority scheme and redirect at least a portion of the commanded pressure to the first hydraulic device upon completion of the shift action.

A system for robust fault detection in an electrically variable, hydraulically controlled transmission includes independently monitoring hydraulic pressure within a hydraulic control circuit and electric machine rotation for detecting clutch state faults.

Electro-mechanical transmission control system

A system includes a friction element having a driving mechanism and a driven mechanism. At least one of the driving mechanism and the driven mechanism is configured to rotate. A drive unit is configured to provide a torque to at least one of the driving mechanism and the driven mechanism. A control processor is configured to diagnose a friction element failure based on a slip speed, which is the difference between rotational speeds of the driving mechanism and the driven mechanism. The control processor is further configured to induce a slip condition as part of a shift process and diagnose the friction element failure if the derived slip speed is substantially zero after inducing the slip condition.

System and method of detecting a failed friction element

A powertrain system includes a hybrid transmission coupled to an engine and an auxiliary hydraulic pump. The auxiliary hydraulic pump is commanded to operate at a predetermined speed only when enable criteria are met. An engine-off state is inhibited based upon a difference between a commanded speed and a monitored operating speed of the auxiliary hydraulic pump.

Monitoring operation of an electro-mechanical transmission having a hydraulic circuit with flow management valves and pressure control solenoids to actuate clutches and pressure monitoring devices to monitor the hydraulic circuit is provided. The transmission operates in fixed gear and continuously variable operating range states. The method comprises controlling position of one of the flow management valves to control operation in one of the operating range states. A fault is detected in the one of the flow management valves based upon outputs of the pressure monitoring devices during steady state operation in one of the continuously variable operating range states. A fault is detected in the one of the flow management valves based upon the output of one of the pressure monitoring devices during a transition in the flow management valve.

Method and apparatus to monitor a valve adapted to control mode to gear transitions during operation of an electro-mechanical transmission

A method for detecting speed faults in a hybrid powertrain having engine and electric machine speed inputs includes directly sensing the engine and machine speeds and performing comparisons of sensed engine speed with engine speed determined based upon the machine speeds.
