A method includes lifting a first plunger within a production string disposed within a wellbore. The production string divides the production string into multiple stages. The plunger landing assemblies include a first landing assembly and an intermediate landing assembly. The lifting includes lifting the first plunger in a first stage to lift production fluid accumulated uphole of the first plunger. The method also includes continuing to lift the first plunger until the first plunger strikes the intermediate one of the plurality of landing assemblies, allowing the production fluid to flow past the second one of the plurality of landing assemblies into a second stage. The method also includes securing the first plunger and lifting, with the production fluid accumulated uphole of a second plunger residing in the second stage, the second plunger to lift the production fluid toward the wellhead.

Multi-stage plunger hydrocarbon lifting

Implementations of the present disclosure include a wellbore assembly that includes a wellhead assembly and a plunger. The wellhead assembly is coupled to a wellbore string disposed within a wellbore. The wellhead assembly includes a lubricator, a spring, and a flexible damper. The lubricator defines a tubular housing. The spring is disposed at least partially within and attached to the tubular housing. The spring comprises a first end attached to the tubular housing. The flexible damper is coupled to a second end of the spring opposite the first end. The plunger strikes, as the plunger is lifted from a downhole location of the wellbore to the terranean surface, the flexible damper. The flexible damper deforms, upon impact with the plunger, to dissipate some or all of the kinetic energy of the plunger.

A wellbore lift system with spring-assisted plunger includes an elongate body, multiple propellers and a spring-loaded flow control assembly. The body can traverse through a wellbore. The wellbore can produce the hydrocarbons to the surface. The body defines an interior volume within which the multiple propellers are disposed. The propellers can spin radially in response to the well tool assembly traveling downhole through the wellbore. The spring-loaded flow control assembly is coupled to the propellers. The flow control assembly can, in response to the well tool assembly traveling downhole through the wellbore, permit fluid flow uphole of the well tool assembly, and can store potential energy in the spring. In response to the well tool assembly traveling uphole through the wellbore, the spring-loaded flow control assembly can prevent fluid flow downhole of the well tool assembly and discharge the potential energy in the spring.

A method for reducing kinetic energy of an energized stimulation fluid upstream of a wellbore, the method comprising the steps of introducing the energized stimulation fluid to an energy dissipating flow block installed in a frac tree, the energy dissipating flow block comprises a body having an internal geometry configured to produce cyclonic flow of the energized stimulation fluid, the body comprising a top and a bottom; an inlet nozzle positioned proximate and parallel to the top of the body; a cushioning sub positioned parallel to the top of the body and opposite the inlet nozzle; and an outlet nozzle positioned perpendicular to the bottom of the body; reducing the kinetic energy of the energized stimulation fluid due to the cyclonic flow in the body; introducing the stimulation fluid to the frac tree; and introducing the stimulation fluid to the wellbore through the frac tree.

A downhole catcher for wellbore plunger includes an elongate, hollow body, a plunger catcher plate and a hydraulic actuation assembly. The body can be installed within a wellbore, and defines an interior volume through which a plunger of a plunger lift system can travel from the surface toward the subsurface reservoir. The plunger catcher plate is attached to a downhole end of the body. The plate can transition between a first and plate positions in which a plate axis is perpendicular to and parallel to the body axis, respectively. The plate can, in the second plate position, catch the plunger traveling from the surface toward the subsurface reservoir. The hydraulic actuation assembly is connected to the plunger catcher plate and can transition the plunger catcher plate from the first plate position to a second plate position in response to being hydraulically actuated.

A downhole tubing disconnect assembly includes a first tubing portion disposed in a wellbore, a second tubing portion downhole of the first tubing portion, and an actuation sleeve positioned between the first tubing portion and the second tubing portion. The actuation sleeve has a cylindrical body that selectively connects the first tubing portion and the second tubing portion. The actuation sleeve includes an uphole portion of the cylindrical body to selectively engage the first tubing portion, a downhole portion of the cylindrical body to selectively engage the second tubing portion, and a shifting profile in the cylindrical body. The shifting profile selectively engages a shifting tool disposed within the wellbore.

A valve assembly and a method for controlling a wellbore fluid flow. The valve assembly includes a tubular having an outer surface and an inner surface. The inner surface defines a void. Multiple flow paths paths extend from the inner surface to the outer surface. A flow tube is slideably coupled to the outer surface and movable between a first position preventing a flow of fluid through the flow paths and a second position allowing the flow of fluid through the flow paths. An actuator sub-assembly is operably coupled to the flow tube. The actuator sub-assembly is configured to actuate the flow tube from the first position to the second position responsive to a differential pressure greater than or equal to a threshold differential pressure. The actuator sub-assembly includes a pressure cartridge, a burst disc, a retention shear ring, a retraction power spring, and a pressure chamber.

Controlling a wellbore fluid flow

A multistage plunger lift system includes an upper production tubing segment positioned in a wellbore uphole of a lower production tubing segment, with the upper segment having a greater diameter than the lower segment. A lower travelling plunger and an upper traveling plunger are sized and configured to fit and travel within the lower segment and the upper segment, respectively. A plunger lift tool is positioned in the upper segment between the upper plunger and the lower plunger, and includes within its main body a fluid passageway with a one-way valve. A plunger receptacle sleeve at the bottom end of the lift tool receives the lower plunger and includes one or more vents configured to allow fluids to flow around the lower plunger when the lower plunger is received within the plunger receptacle sleeve.

A downhole pump includes a housing, a plunger that is disposed within the housing, and a rod that is secured to the plunger. The housing includes a magnet that is disposed at an uphole end of the housing. The plunger includes a traveling valve that is disposed at a downhole end of the plunger. The rod includes a conducting shaft that is attached to an uphole end of the plunger. The conducting shaft is configured to extend a magnetic field generated by the magnet when the conducting shaft is positioned adjacent the magnet to magnetically force the traveling valve into an open state.

Anti-gas locking pumps and related methods in oil and gas applications

A method for wellbore fluid flow control in which a frangible flapper is disposed in a wellbore. The frangible flapper is engaged to a flow tube disposed within the wellbore to keep the frangible flapper in a biased open position to allow fluid flow through the wellbore. The method includes moving the flow tube longitudinally in a first direction within the wellbore and relative to the frangible flapper. The method includes responsive to moving the flow tube longitudinally in the first direction, disengaging the flow tube from the frangible flapper. The method includes responsive to disengaging the flow tube from the frangible flapper, causing the frangible flapper to move from the biased open position to an unbiased shut position. The method includes responsive to the frangible flapper moving to the unbiased shut position, stopping fluid flow within the wellbore from a downhole location downhole of the frangible flapper.
