A system for controlling flow in a wellbore can include a down-hole control module that is hydraulically coupled to multiple components of the system. The control module can include a computer, which can be preprogrammed to operate the various components in a particular sequence, and communicate confirmation or error signals to a surface location. The control module can also include a micro-hydraulic motor and pump that can that can be instructed by the computer to selectively deliver hydraulic fluid to one or more of the components of the system. The system can include isolation members such as packers, hydraulic pressure maintenance devices (PMDs), hydraulic sheer joints, inflow control devices or valves (ICDs or ICVs) and a three-position valve that can be actuated by the control module without necessitating communication with a surface location.

Remotely operated and multi-functional down-hole control tools

A system for controlling flow in a wellbore can include a down-hole control module that is hydraulically coupled to multiple components of the system. A method and apparatus that includes positioning a completion string that has an internal passageway and that has an external surface that at least partially defines an external region within a wellbore; isolating a zone of the external region from a wellbore hydrostatic pressure; measuring a pressure within the external region of the isolated zone; determining whether the pressure within the external region of the isolated zone is within a predetermined pressure range; and operating a valve that controls a flow of a fluid through a flow path from the internal region to the external region of the isolated zone when the pressure within the external region is outside of the predetermined pressure range.

Downhole pressure maintenance system using a controller

A method and apparatus that includes an elongated base pipe having an external surface at least partially defining an external region and an internal surface at least partially defining an internal region; and a pressure maintenance device disposed in the base pipe and comprising: a flow path that extends between the internal region and the external region; and a valve having a gas charged chamber, the valve allowing the flow of a fluid from the internal region to the external region through the first flow path when a pressure differential between a pressure associated with the internal region and a pressure associated with the gas charged chamber is less than a maximum pressure threshold and when a pressure differential between the external region and the pressure associated with the gas charged chamber is greater than a minimum pressure threshold.

Various error measures are suitable and can be used.

A method of removing a wellbore isolation device comprises: increasing the temperature surrounding the wellbore isolation device; and allowing at least a portion of the first composition to undergo a phase transformation from a solid to a liquid. A method of inhibiting or preventing fluid flow in a wellbore comprises: decreasing the temperature of at least a portion of the wellbore; positioning the wellbore isolation device in the at least a portion of the wellbore; and increasing the temperature of the at least a portion of the wellbore.

Methods of removing a wellbore isolation device using a eutectic composition

A method and apparatus that includes an elongated base pipe having an external surface at least partially defining an external region and an internal surface at least partially defining an internal region; and a pressure maintenance device disposed in the base pipe and includes a first flow path that extends between an opening in the external surface and an opening in the internal surface; a first valve that controls the flow of a first fluid through the first flow path; a first pressure differential sensor that controls the actuation of the first valve and is in fluid communication with the external region; and a pressurized fluid source in fluid communication with the first pressure differential sensor; wherein a first pressure differential threshold associated with the first pressure differential sensor is the difference between a pressure within the external region and the pressurized fluid source.

Downhole pressure maintenance system using reference pressure

Testing scale buildup in a well tool can include pressurizing separate cationic and anionic solutions, then heating the separate solutions, mixing together the solutions, and exposing the well tool to the mixed solutions. A well tool can be constructed by a) determining velocities of flow at a predetermined offset from surfaces of a geometric model representative of the well tool, b) calculating scale buildup on the surfaces based at least in part on the velocities, c) reducing pressure change per unit distance along selected ones of the surfaces having greater than a predetermined level of scale buildup, and d) repeating steps a-c until all scale buildup is no greater than the predetermined level. A method of predicting scale buildup can include inputting a parameter indicative of flow through a well tool to a mathematical model, which determines a rate of scale buildup on a surface of the well tool.

A wellbore isolation device comprises: at least a first material, wherein the first material: (A) is a metal or a metal alloy; and (B) is capable of at least partially dissolving when an electrically conductive path exists between the first material and a second material and at least a portion of the first and second materials are in contact with an electrolyte, wherein the second material: (i) is a metal or metal alloy; and (ii) has a greater anodic index than the first material. A method of removing the wellbore isolation device comprises: contacting or allowing the wellbore isolation device to come in contact with an electrolyte; and allowing at least a portion of the first material to dissolve.

Methods of removing a wellbore isolation device using galvanic corrosion

An orbital downhole separator for separating well fluids into constituents of different specific gravities. Specifically, it is designed to separate water from oil or gas. The apparatus comprises a housing with a rotating member therein driven by a motor in the housing. Well fluid flows through the rotating member and is subjected to centrifugal force to separate the components. A flow conditioner is used to facilitate separation. The invention includes several different versions of the flow conditioner including an impeller, a stator and controllers for controlling the speed of the motor in response to signals related to the amount of petroleum in the water.

A system for variably resisting flow of a fluid composition can include a flow passage and a set of one or more branch passages which intersect the flow passage, whereby a proportion of the composition diverted from the passage to the set of branch passages varies based on at least one of a) viscosity of the fluid composition, and b) velocity of the fluid composition in the flow passage. Another variable flow resistance system can include a flow path selection device that selects which of multiple flow paths a majority of fluid flows through from the device, based on a ratio of desired fluid to undesired fluid in the composition. Yet another variable flow resistance system can include a flow chamber, with a majority of the composition entering the chamber in a direction which changes based on a ratio of desired fluid to undesired fluid in the composition.
