Antimicrobial compositions and methods of use thereof

Compositions and methods for reducing the growth of and/or preventing the formation of a microbial biofilm are disclosed. The composition comprises an antimicrobial SMR peptide comprising an HIV-1 SMRwt peptide and a cell penetrating peptide (CPP) domain. In some embodiments, the composition further comprises one or more other antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), antibiotics, matrix-inhibiting compounds, matrix-disaggregating compounds, quorum sensing inhibitors, or a combination thereof. In other embodiments, the compositions are used for impregnating or coating an article and/or material surface with the composition to render it less prone to microbial infections.

During 'fracking' operations, proppants are used to keep open the fissures that are created, and stimulation fluids are often injected into the subterranean hydrocarbon-bearing geological formations to assist in capturing released hydrocarbons. However, because fissure surfaces formed in subterranean hydrocarbon-bearing geological formations from fracking tend to be hydrophobic, both introduced stimulation fluids and the hydrocarbons from the subterranean hydrocarbon-bearing geological formations tend to adhere to the fissure surfaces. The addition of a gemini surfactant appears to reduce the hydrophobic nature of the geological structure's fissure surfaces, thereby wetting surfaces of indigenous rock and/or introduced proppant surfaces. The addition of the gemini surfactant results in an increase of the fluid flow through the subterranean hydrocarbon-bearing geological formations, thereby enhancing of recovery of hydrocarbons and introduced stimulation fluids.

A method for reducing a permeability of at least one zone in a subterranean formation that includes introducing a treatment fluid to at least one permeable zone in a subterranean formation. Treatment methods and treatment fluids for increasing permeability of organic shale formations are described herein. The treatment method includes treating an organic shale formation with a treatment fluid. The treatment fluid includes a solvent that dissolves bitumen in the shale formation. After treating the shale formation with the treatment fluid, oil is recovered from the shale formation. By removing bitumen from pores and pore throats within the formation, the solvent increases permeability of the formation and allows mobile oil to flow more easily through the formation.
