The invention relates to a circuit or microchip for the detection of poor sources of (or very weak) electrical and/or magnetic fields. In one embodiment a device of the present invention includes a microchip consisting of a plate with a plurality of cells, each cell includes a crystal suspended in a semiconducting polymer and piece of metal wire. The cell is insulated by another polymer. A voltage is applied to parallel wires running on each side of the cell, thus inducing a first (or static, or initial) voltage when measured from the cell to the wire. Changes in magnetic or electrical fields are detected by noting a change in voltage from the cell, which is caused by the crystal changing orientation due to the change in the field the circuit is subjected to.

Embedded crystal circuit for the detection of weak electrical and magnetic fields

The present invention includes a method for biomimetic-inspired infrared sensors utilizing a bottom up approach. This method includes providing a sinusoidal alternating electrical field between a preformed electrode gap comprising two gold micro-electrodes. Providing single needles of zinc phosphide crystals optimized for growth conditions using a physical vapour transport. Immobilizing at least one individual zinc phosphide nanowire in the preformed electrode gap using dielectrophoretic manipulation. And, placing and contacting the at least one individual zinc phosphide nanowire in the preformed electrode gap. Two nanowires are combined to form a lambda shape for improved sensing.

Method for producing biomimetic-inspired infrared sensors from zinc phosphide microwires

The present invention describes a laminar flow bioreactor with improved laminar flow lines of fluids. The bioreactor housing defines a chamber adapted to receive a scaffold. An inlet aperture at one end of the chamber is in fluid communication with an outlet aperture at the opposite end of the chamber. A bypass mechanism selectively operable from an open position to a closed position consisting of an iris assembly directs a portion of fluid flowing through the chamber around the scaffold-receiving area. This bioreactor is inserted in a bioreactor system.

The present invention relates to methods and devices for cutting produce, such as onions and other vegetables. More particularly, the present invention relates to methods and devices for minimizing exposure to noxious and irritating gasses that are emitted from certain freshly cut produce, such as the syn-propanethial-S-oxide gas that is emitted by freshly cut onions. A posterior vaginal retractor for vaginal surgery or procedure includes a flat plate member, a support member connected to the plate member, an arm member vertically adjustably connected to the support member, and a speculum member connected to the arm member. The plate member is positioned under the female patient's buttocks when the patient is on the operating table with legs up. The speculum member is inserted into the vagina, and the position of the speculum member is vertically adjusted to a desired fixed position by vertically moving the arm member so that the speculum member will depress the posterior wall of the vagina to facilitate a vaginal procedure or surgery.

A finger protector and grasping implement for fitting over a single finger during surgical procedures includes an elongated, curved, hollow body having a cylindrical wall, a closed end wall connected to the cylindrical wall and defining an open end in opposed relationship with the closed end wall. A plurality of projections of various lengths extend outwardly from the cylindrical wall and from the end wall, and the end wall defines a groove therein to act as a safety stop for preventing undesired slipping movement of a surgical needle during surgical procedures.

A set of mid-infrared transparent elements with new element geometry, design of the optics and radiation path configuration is described. Radiation from the IR microscope objective, after being internally reflected at the element/sample interface is either returned to the objective or is directed through the microscope condenser optics with sample information to the detector system for spectral analysis. Alternatively, the beam may bounce off the element/sample interface either once, twice or multiple times at the same angle of incidence, to allow examination of the micro surface of the sample by internal reflectance as well as transmission of the beam through the same sample area. Further, a method to perform external reflectance measurements at different angles of incidence using the described apparatus is discribed.

Mid-infrared analysis system

A new set of mid-Infrared transparent elements with different geometries to enable examination of the sample surfaces by Internal Reflectance Micro Infrared Spectroscopy is disclosed. The Infrared beam from the IR microscope, either collimated or focused, enters the surface of the element and impinges on an inclined surface of contact between the sample and the element at an angle above the critical angle. This IR beam from the microscope operating in the reflectance mode is then internally reflected at the beveled surface cut at a selected angle, travels inside the IR element, reaches a circular reflector surface where it is reflected back to retrace its initial path. The beam once again comes in contact with the sample at the sample and the element interface and is reflected. The returning of the IR beam to retrace its original path without any significant loss of radiation is accomplished by the following methods: a) the circular end of the outer surface where the internally reflected beam strikes is mirrored from outside b) a retro mirror assembly is placed immediately outside the surface where the internally reflected beam strikes. The center of curvature of this mirror is configured to coincide with the center of curvature of the circular element at the point of contact between the sample and the element.
