The present invention concerns a filtering medium, a method for the production thereof, the use of said filtering medium and a method for reducing the content of multiple contaminants simultaneously in fluids by means of said filtering medium through a physical barrier, a chemical process or biological process, wherein said filtering medium consists of or comprises at least one of the following: a mixture (A) containing a major part of an iron-based powder and a minor part of a copper based powder, an iron-copper powder alloy (B), and an iron-based porous and permeable composite containing copper (C).

The present invention relates to improved metallurgical powder compositions that incorporate solid lubricants, methods for preparing and using the same, and methods of making compacted parts. Ejection properties, such as stripping pressure and sliding pressure, of compacted parts can be improved by using the solid lubricants. The solid lubricants contain polyalkylene-polyalkylene oxide block copolymer lubricants or a combination of polyalkylene-polyalkylene oxide block copolymer lubricants and at least one additional lubricant. The polyalkylene-polyalkylene oxide block copolymer lubricants include at least one block A of a linear or branched polyalkylene chain having from about 5 to about 500 carbon atoms, and at least one block B of an alkylene oxide chain having a formula &mdash;&lsqb;O(CH ) &rsqb; &mdash;, or &mdash;&lsqb;(CH ) O&rsqb; &mdash;. The polyalkylene block copolymer lubricants can have a formula represented as A-B or A-B-A.

Improved methods for coating particulate materials at low shear conditions and preferably below the melting point of the coating material are provided. In one aspect, metallurgical compositions are provided that contain a metal-based powder bound to an alloying powder or powders by way of a low melting polymer or wax binding agent, which is preferably polyethylene. The binding agent is blended with the metal-based and alloying powders at elevated temperatures preferably below the melting point of the binding agent. The bonded metallurgical composition can be used in compaction processes to manufacture compacted parts that can be sintered to impart strength.

Metallurgical powder compositions are provided that contain a metal powder that is associated with a polymeric material in admixture with a solid, particulate polyether lubricant. The incorporation of the polyether lubricant enhances the green strength properties of compacted parts made from the powder compositions, and generally reduces the ejection forces required to remove the compacted part from the die cavity.

The present invention provides for iron-based metallurgical powder compositions that contain nanoparticle metal or metal oxide flow agents useful for enhancing the flow characteristics of the compositions, particularly at elevated processing temperatures. This invention presents, inter alia, novel iron-based powder compositions and compacted articles made from the same. The novel iron-based powder compositions of the invention are formulated with a fluoric resin, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, which provides powder mixtures with good flow properties and good uniformity. Compacted articles made from the novel iron-based powder compositions of the invention show reduced core losses and have good magnetic permeability over an extended frequency range. The present invention provides lubricant compositions for the powder metallurgical field. The lubricant compositions contain a solid phase lubricant such as graphite, molybdenum disulfide, and polytetrafluoroethylene in combination with a liquid phase lubricant that is a binder for the solid phase lubricant. The binder can be chosen from various classes of compounds including polyethylene glycols, polyethylene glycol esters, partial esters of C.sub.3-6 polyhydric alcohols, polyvinyl esters, and polyvinyl pyrrolidones. The binder is solubilized in an organic solvent.
