A bioabsorbable plug implant, suitable for bone tissue regeneration, includes a first portion, and a second portion extending outwardly from the first portion, the first and second portions formed from expandable material. A method for bone tissue regeneration includes providing a bioabsorbable plug implant, wherein the implant has a first portion and a second portion extending outwardly from the first portion. The first and second portions are formed from expandable material. The second portion is inserted into a defect or gap of a bone. The first surface engages the outside contour of the defect or gap. The plug implant is allowed to contact body fluids, thereby expanding the size of the plug implant so that the plug fits into the defect or gap.

Bioabsorbable plug implants and method for bone tissue regeneration

Bioresorbable scaffolds for bone engineering, such as repair of bone defects, particularly long bone defects, or augmentation of bone length are described. Scaffolds are porous and comprise multiple side channels. In one embodiment, scaffolds are made from layers of micro-filament meshes comprising polycaprolactone (PCL) or a PCL-composite sequentially laid in incremental 60 degrees of rotation to produce a 0/60/120 degree layering pattern, providing for the formation of interconnected pores. The scaffold can comprise a central channel filled, packed or infused with suitable agents such as bioactive agents. Furthermore, the scaffolds are stiff but yet fracture resistant and with sufficient bending, compressive and torsional strength suitable for bone engineering. The slow degradation of the scaffold is sufficient for the 3D matrix to maintain structure integrity and mechanical properties during the remodelling process.

Resorbable scaffolds for bone repair and long bone tissue engineering

The invention relates to the use of Fused Deposition Modeling to construct three-dimensional (3D) bioresorbable scaffolds from bioresorbable polymers such as polycaprolactone (PCL), or from composites of bioresorbable polymers and ceramics, such as polycaprolactone/hydroxyapatite (PCL/HA). Incorporation of a bioresorbable ceramic to produce a hybrid/composite material support provides the desired degradation and resorption kinetics. Such a composite material improves the biocompatibility and hard tissue integration and allows for increased initial flash spread of serum proteins. The basic resorption products of the composite also avoids the formation of an unfavorable environment for hard tissue cells due to a decreased pH. The scaffolds have applications in tissue engineering, e.g., in tissue engineering bone and cartilage.

Three-dimensional bioresorbable scaffolds for tissue engineering applications

The invention relates to a bioreactor comprising a chamber for containing cells or tissue cultures within a culture medium. The bioreactor also comprises a detector capable of detecting a change in one or more metabolites associated with growth of the cell or tissue cultures within the chamber and a chamber drive capable of rotating the chamber at a first speed about a first axis and a second speed about a second axis, the second axis being disposed at an angle relative to the first axis. In use, the magnitude of the first speed and the second speed are independently variable of each other.

Methods for fabricating a filament for use in tissue engineering

A process for producing sintered titanium-graphite having improved wear resistance and low frictional characteristics is described. The said process which produces titanium-graphite composites having a triphasic structure with controlled porosity and a graphite lubricating film, comprises sintering a mixture of titanium and graphite powders in which the percentage of graphite may vary from 4 to 8 percent at temperatures from about 800.degree. C. to 1600.degree. C., for about 1/2 to 2 hours, under a compaction pressure of 0.17 to 0.62 MPa. The composites have applications in biomedical engineering and other fields of engineering due to their biocompatibility, strength and improved wear resistance.
