A method of establishing a packet data connection includes accessing a Domain Name Server (DNS) to obtain an Internet Protocol (IP) address of a vehicle telematics unit; initiating a mobile-terminated packet data connection with the vehicle telematics unit using the IP address of the vehicle telematics unit; and establishing the mobile-terminated packet data connection when the vehicle telematics unit determines that a hostname representing an IP address of a third party initiating the mobile-terminated packet data connection matches at least one approved hostname recognized by the vehicle telematics unit.

Method of establishing a mobile-terminated packet data connection

A communication system and methods of using the communication system is described. One method includes configuring a telematics unit in a vehicle with at least one access point name (APN). The steps of the method include: configuring the telematics unit with a default APN prior to a legal transfer of possession of the vehicle; and thereafter, activating the telematics unit for the provision of content data in connection with the legal transfer of possession of the vehicle, wherein the activating includes replacing the default APN of the telematics unit with a geographically-specific APN.

Configuring a vehicle to receive content data

A system and method for carrying out communications with a remote communication device (RCD) utilizes a data channel communication path to provide a call request from the RCD to a telematics services provider (TSP). In response to the call request, the TSP obtains a temporary phone number and sends it back to the RCD which then places a voice call to the TSP using the phone number. The received call is connected to an advisor to handle voice communication with the caller using the RCD. Based on the prior association of the assigned temporary phone number with the calling RCD, the TSP is able to recognize the caller or calling device based on the number called and then automatically provide the advisor with relevant information about the caller or calling RCD, such as the caller's name or subscription account information.

Examples of the invention allow a content service provider to utilize one or more overlapping wireless networks in a given area to efficiently and cost effectively deliver content and services to a mobile device contained within a terminal. Examples of the invention analyze the characteristics of each wireless network such as cost, latency, security, and bandwidth, the terminal capabilities, and the requested service to determine the most efficient manner to deliver services over one or more wireless networks in a given area. In addition, the service provider re-analyzes the efficiency of service delivery when the mobile device enters a new mobile area. Therefore, sustaining efficient content and service download throughout delivery.

Service provider initiated access network selection

A system and method for obtaining data during a multi-way call involving at least a vehicle telematics unit, call center, and third party such as a public safety answering point (PSAP). While connected together in at least a three-way voice call, the connection from the telematics unit is switched out of the call and connected to a data modem to receive vehicle data uploaded from the telematics unit. This can be used to provide vehicle location and other vehicle information such as current vehicle conditions and operational state. Thereafter, the telematics unit connection is switched back into the multi-way call to permit continued voice communications between the parties. The uploaded vehicle data can then be used by the call center or PSAP to provide emergency or other assistance.
