Aspects of the subject technology relate to a sensor for a downhole tool. The downhole tool can include a collar and a sensor. The sensor can be secured to the collar for measuring one or more operational characteristics of the downhole tool during operation of the downhole tool. The sensor can include a substrate. The sensor can also include a plurality of strain gauges disposed on the substrate. The plurality of strain gauges can be configured to measure axial strains and torsional strains on the collar for measuring the one or more operational characteristics of the downhole tool.

Systems and methods for determining azimuth of a wellbore while drilling. A method of drilling a wellbore that includes rotating a drill bit to extend the wellbore into a subterranean formation. The method may further include measuring magnetic toolface with a first magnetometer while rotating the drill bit. The method may further include obtaining a cross-axial magnetic field measurement. The method may further include determining azimuth at a point in the wellbore using at least the magnetic toolface and the cross-axial magnetic field measurement. The method may further include using the azimuth as feedback in the drilling the wellbore.

A drilling tool for use in a wellbore comprises a first collar having a first bore extending from a first send to a second end and an internal thread disposed on the bore at the second end. The drilling tool also comprises a second collar having a second bore extending from a third end to a fourth end and an external thread disposed on the third end. The third end is coupled to the second end of the first collar. A first set of components is housed within the first bore and a second set of components is housed on a sidewall of the second collar formed between the second bore and an outer surface of the second collar.

A desiccating module configured to be installed in a downhole tool is provided. The desiccating module includes a housing having a containment portion, and desiccant located in the containment portion of the housing capable of retaining moisture therein. The housing is configured to be retained in a downhole tool containing moisture sensitive electronics. The housing is configured to permit passage of moisture from outside the housing to the containment portion and to retain the desiccant within the containment portion. The desiccant have a retention capacity sufficient to hold a predetermined threshold amount of moisture.

In one example of rotational ranging in a wellbore in which a wellbore component having an axis of rotation is disposed, a wellbore ranging sensor is disposed on a circumferential area surrounding the axis of rotation. The sensor is moved on the circumferential area to multiple distinct sensing positions. At each sensing position, a magnetic field from another wellbore that is apart from the wellbore is measured resulting in multiple magnetic field measurements at the multiple distinct sensing positions. The multiple magnetic field measurements are provided to determine a position of the wellbore relative to the other wellbore using at least a subset of the multiple magnetic field measurements.

Systems and methods for performing ranging measurements using third well referencing

This application relates to various methods and apparatus for rapidly obtaining accurate formation property data from a drilled earthen borehole. Once obtained, the formation property data, including formation fluid pressure, may be corrected, calibrated and supplemented using various other data and techniques disclosed herein. Furthermore, the formation property data may be used for numerous other purposes. For example, the data may be used to correct or supplement other information gathered from the borehole; it may be used to supplement formation images or models; or, it may be used to adjust a drilling or producing parameter. Various other uses of accurately and quickly obtained formation property data are also disclosed.

Methods and apparatus for using formation property data

A method of testing a downhole formation using a formation tester on a drill string. The formation tester is disposed downhole on a drill string and a formation test is performed by forming a seal between a formation probe assembly and the formation. A drawdown piston then creates a volume within a cylinder to draw formation fluid into the volume through the probe assembly. The pressure of the fluid within the cylinder is monitored. The formation test procedure may then be adjusted. The test procedure may be adjusted to account for the bubble point pressure of the fluid being monitored. The pressure may monitored to verify a proper seal is formed or is being maintained. The test procedure may also be performed by maintaining a substantially constant drawdown rate using a hydraulic threshold or a variable restrictor.

Methods for using a formation tester

A compression scheme for reducing the amount of data that must be transmitted uplink from a formation test while drilling apparatus. Periodic samples are taken within the formation test apparatus and prior to transmitting data uplink, the samples are analyzed to generate curve fit parameters that define a curve that most closely fits the sampled data. A minimal set a data points, time variables, and curve fit parameters are transmitted to the surface where the transmitted data is used to reconstruct the formation pressure test curve. A quality of fit value is also transmitted with the minimal data set as an indication of the quality of the fit between the reconstructed data and the actually sampled data points.
