A method for fabricating a permanent magnetic structure in a substrate, the method comprises the steps of providing a substrate with at least one cavity; providing magnetic particles dispersed with a bonding material for forming a bonding compound; filling the cavities with the bonding compound; and curing the compound to form the permanent magnetic structure in the substrate.

A novel exposure frame counter is disclosed that gives the appearance of more expensive LCD type displays while not requiring the support electronics and has the ability to erase itself after being used. A disc of low permeable magnetic material has exposure frame numbers recorded into the material in a selected manner so as to create a desired magnetic field. A magnetic micro-shutter is used to create the exposure frame numbers by placing individual micro-shutters over the disc which react to the magnetic field of the disc to form numerals that indicate the exposure frame the camera is on. When the camera is advanced, the section of the disc that was indicating the exposure frame advances to the next frame and the previous frame passes across a field created by a strong permanent magnet and is erased by the permanent magnet. The magnetic micro-shutters of the exposure frame counter are formed essentially as a seven-segment display to form the numerals of the exposure frame counter.

A permanent magnet micro-rotor comprises a cylinder of magnetic material having a plurality of spaced-apart slots disposed around the periphery of the magnetic material. The magnetic material is magnetized by placing conductors in the spaced apart slots and energizing the conductors so that magnetic poles are formed between the spaced-apart slots.

According to one aspect of the present invention, an imaging apparatus includes an annular motor with a central opening and a plurality of lens elements positioned inside the central opening. The motor includes a stator and a homogeneous cylindrical rotor. This rotor is positioned inside the stator and is 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm thick and 2.5 mm to 5 mm long. According to one embodiment of the present invention the rotor is characterized by an outer cylindrical surface defined by its circumference. The rotor has a plurality of magnetic poles, and the ratio of the circumference of the outer cylindrical surface to the number of magnetic poles is between 1 and 2.

The device includes a ceramic unitary structure having at least two sintered ceramic parts, each of which when aligned forms a cavity and two spaced apart outlet holes connected to different portions of the cavity; a sintered ceramic conduit provided in the trough of the ceramic unitary structure and having an inner passageway with such sintered ceramic conduit forming a coil structure; and an embedded multiwound coil formed in the inner passageway of an electrically conductive material.

A method and apparatus for measuring wall shear stress in pipe as a result of fluid flow therethrough employs a glass flow tube, magnetic particles of sufficiently small size such that the form drag force on the individual particles is orders of magnitude smaller than the viscous shear forces on the particle, and a magnet of known magnetic field strength. The glass flow tube with a known coefficient of friction allows visual inspection of particle release and further allows for the determination of the frictional forces on the particles. The magnetic particles are placed inside the tube with the magnet held in close proximity to the exterior wall of the tube. With the particles in place, fluid flow is initiated. The magnetic field strength at the surface of the flow tube is then reduced until the magnetic particles are hydrodynamically dislodged from the interior of the glass tube. Magnetic field strength may be reduced either by retracting the magnet away from the glass tube or by using an electromagnet and reducing current thereto. The position of the magnet, or the current to the electromagnet, at which the particles are dislodged is used to qualitatively determine the wall shear stress.

Apparatus for polarizing a multipole permanent magnet having a main surface is disclosed. The apparatus includes a support member for supporting the magnet; and conductive tubular elements in the form of a coil, the tubular elements being mounted on the support member in relation to the magnet so that the tubular elements produce a magnetizing field across the surface of the magnet to polarize such magnet when the tubular elements are energized. The apparatus further includes circuitry for energizing the tubular elements to produce the magnetizing field to polarize the magnet, and a structure for circulating coolant through the tubular elements to limit the heat build-up of the tubular elements when the tubular elements are energized.
