Apparatus for feeding items (10) such as flattened carton blanks from a magazine (12) for subsequent handling and treatment, comprises a transfer turret (16) mounted for continuous rotation adjacent the mouth (14) of the magazine, transfer stations (50) on the turret positioned to pass the mouth of the magazine and comprising means (6, 54, 56) for removing a said item (10) from the mouth of the magazine (12), erecting the item if it is a blank, and for carrying the said item as the turret rotates, an endless pocket conveyor (30), for receiving said items from said turrent, positioned adjacent said turret so as to be passed by the or each said transfer station as the turret rotates so as to produce a sequence of transfer station/conveyor interactions, and a globoidal cam indexing box (37) for driving said conveyor around an endless path in an intermittent motion in which said conveyor is halted for a period and is restarted in motion during intervals between at least selected sequential ones of said transfer station/conveyor interactions such that the distance travelled by the conveyor during decelerating to a stop and accelerating back to normal running speed is equal to the length of one pocket (32) on the conveyor.

The invention describes an apparatus for the sterile packaging of flowable substances, comprising a conveyer belt (4), from one end of which open packages (5) can be passed by an intermediate conveyer means (21-23) through a sterilizing chamber (7) and to a second conveyer belt (13) disposed in a sterile chamber (15) enclosed in a housing (14), filling means (17) and sealing means (18) being disposed in this sterile chamber (15) while an outlet sluice (24) is disposed in a wall of the housing. In order to simplify and so further improve such an apparatus that a more effective sterilization process is achieved, it is according to the invention envisaged to construct the sterilizing chamber (15) as an inlet sluice (8).

Apparatus for the sterile packaging of contents

The invention relates to an arrangment for the continuous heat treatment and packaging of a liquid product with the object of sterilizing the product, the product being heated for a short time together with, and surrounded by, the packing material wherein it is to be enclosed. The product is introduced into a tube of flexible material whereupon the tube containing the product is introduced between two parallel metal bands, movable synchronously in their longitudinal direction, the tube being received and compressed between the bands so that the tube is transported with the bands at the same time as the cross-sectional area of the tube is reduced and the product is made to flow forward through the compressed tube in a gaplike space. Heat is transmitted to the product with the help of the metal bands (1) while the product present between the metal bands is kept under pressure. After the heating required for sterilization, the product is cooled and while it is still in the tube, is made to emerge and be freed from the metal bands, whereupon the tube and the product are divided into individual packing units through repeated transverse sealing of the tube.

Arrangement for the continuous heat treatment and packaging of a liquid

The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for the continuous heat treatment and packaging of a liquid product with the object of sterilizing the product, the product being heated for a short time together with, and surrounded by, the packing material wherein it is to be enclosed. Described is a packaging for liquid, made of cardboard, which is made impermeable to liquid by means of a plastic coating over its surface. It has side-walls, base and top wall (5), connected to one another by folded and/or sealed seams. A pouring aperture is located in top wall (5) close to the edge line, and can be torn off and has a separate plastic strip (8) covering the pouring aperture and being applied round the edge of the pouring aperture, and is sealed on at least from the inside. So that the edge of the pouring aperture remains covered with a protective layer after opening and so that the closure and the protective layer can be produced with simple means, according to the invention the plastic strip (8) covers the pouring aperture tightly and is fixed via two tacked strips (7, 31) to an outer cover strip, in which a hole (15) is located above the pouring aperture, the two tacked strips being smaller than the surface area of cover strip (6), the first tacked strip (7) being applied at a distance from hole (15) and outside the pouring aperture, the second tacked strip (31) being applied outside hole (15) of cover strip (6) and within the pouring aperture (16), the outer cover strip (6) being fixed to the top wall (5) of the packaging via a third tacked strip (9) lying outside the plastic strip (8).

When a packaging container is formed by sealing an area of sheet material to the edge of another area of sheet material, the L-joint or T-joint so formed is sometimes liable to rupture when subjected to blows or strain. According to this invention that danger is reduced or eliminated by moulding a zone (4) of an end closure panel (3) abutting on the container wall edge to which it is jointed so that it forms a flange resting against and bonded to the face of said wall (1). The flange may be provided with a lip (6) projecting from a short length of the edge of said closure panel.
