Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive an indication of a positioning reference signal configuration of a base station. The UE may determine, based on the positioning reference signal configuration, a reference point within a carrier bandwidth of a component carrier and a frequency domain allocation for a positioning reference signal relative to the reference point. The UE may transmit the positioning reference signal or measure the positioning reference signal based on the frequency domain allocation.

Bandwidth part operation and downlink or uplink positioning reference signal scheme

A position of a user equipment (UE) may be determined using downlink based solutions (e.g. OTDOA), uplink based solutions (e.g. UTDOA), or combined downlink and uplink based solutions (e.g. RTT). The serving gNBs may request neighboring gNBs to produce downlink reference signal transmissions to a target UE and/or measure uplink reference signal transmissions from the target UE. The serving gNB may receive the uplink reference signal measurements from neighboring gNBs and obtain an own uplink reference signal measurement and forward to the UE or another network entity all the uplink reference signal measurements. The UE may use the uplink reference signal measurements, along with the UE's own downlink reference signal measurements to determine RTTs. The serving gNBs or another entity may keep the uplink reference signal measurements and may determine RTTs after receiving the downlink reference signal measurements from the UE.

System and methods for supporting uplink and downlink positioning procedures in a wireless network

A signal measuring method includes: receiving, at a user equipment, first positioning assistance data having a first area of applicability and a first positioning assistance data profile; storing the first positioning assistance data at the user equipment; determining, at the user equipment, that second positioning assistance data correspond to the first positioning assistance data based on the first area of applicability including a second area of applicability, of the second positioning assistance data, and based on a second positioning assistance data profile of the second positioning assistance data corresponding to the first positioning assistance data profile; and measuring, at the user equipment, a positioning signal corresponding to the second area of applicability using the first positioning assistance data in response to determining that the second positioning assistance data correspond to the first positioning assistance data.

Regional positioning assistance data

Methods, systems, computer-readable media, and apparatuses for UE positioning are described. In some embodiments, a UE is configured to perform positioning measurements according to capabilities of the UE. Over time, the capabilities may change. Based on a change, the UE reports, to a location server, an indication that the capabilities have changed. This indication can include updated capabilities information or an error related to previously reported capabilities information and/or availability of the updated capabilities information. In turn, the location server may indicate, to the UE, updated assistance data and/or a request for updated location information, such that next position measurements performed by the UE may be based on the updated assistance data and/or the request.

Updating user equipment's positioning capabilities during positioning session

Positioning of a UE is supported in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) Inactive state. The UE receives a request for periodic or triggered location and enters the RRC Inactive state. When an event is detected, the UE sends an RRC Resume Request to a gNB that includes an indication of the event. The indication may be an event report that may include downlink positioning measurements. The gNB forwards the event report to a location server, and may later receive and return an event report acknowledgement to the UE in an RRC Release. The indication may instead trigger uplink positioning, with the base station sending an uplink Sounding Reference Signal (SRS) configuration to the UE in an RRC Release, causing the UE to transmit uplink SRS signals to be measured by gNBs. For uplink related position methods like RTT, the gNB can receive both types of indication.

Method and apparatus for location of a user equipment in an inactive state

Techniques are provided for positioning of a mobile device in a wireless network using directional positioning reference signals (PRS), also referred to as PRS beamforming. In an example method, a plurality of directional PRSs are generated for at least one cell for a base station, such that each of the plurality of directional PRSs comprises at least one signal characteristic and a direction of transmission, either or both of which may be distinct or unique. The plurality of directional PRSs is transmitted within the at least one cell, such that each of the plurality of directional PRSs is transmitted in the direction of transmission. A mobile device may acquire and measure at least one of the directional PRSs which may be identified using the associated signal characteristic. The measurement may be used to assist position methods such as OTDOA and ECID and to mitigate multipath.

Systems and methods to facilitate location determination by beamforming of a positioning reference signal

Disclosed are techniques for determining round-trip times (RTTs) between a user equipment (UE) and multiple base stations. In an aspect, the UE transmits an RTT measurement signal whose arrival time is measured by each of the base stations, and each of the base stations returns an RTT response signal whose arrival times are measured by the UE. In another aspect, the base stations each transmit an RTT measurement signal and the UE returns an RTT response signal. The receiver of the RTT measurement signal may include the measured arrival time in a payload of the RTT Response signal. Alternatively, the measured arrival time(s) of the RTT Measurement signal(s) and the transmission time(s) of the RTT Response signal(s) are sent in a separate message. The RTT signals can be wideband signals using low reuse resources.

Systems and methods for multiple round trip time (RTT) estimation in wireless networks

Disclosed are techniques related to wireless communications. In an aspect, a network entity determines whether a source reference signal transmitted from a first transmission-reception point (TRP) is a quasi-collocation (QCL) source of a target reference signal transmitted from a second TRP based, at least in part, on a first bandwidth (BW) portion occupied by the source reference signal and a second BW portion occupied by the target reference signal, the first BW portion having a first start frequency and a first BW size and the second BW portion having a second start frequency and a second BW size, and configures a user equipment (UE) with the source reference signal as the QCL source of the target reference signal when it is so determined.

Constraints on a source reference signal for quasi-collocation timing reference of a positioning reference signal

Positioning of a UE is supported in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) Inactive state. The UE receives from a location server a request for periodic or triggered location and an indication of whether uplink, downlink, or uplink and downlink positioning will be used for subsequent location reporting events when the UE is in the RRC Inactive state. When an event is detected, the UE sends a first event report and a second event report to the location server to report the event and enable UE location while the UE is in the RRC Inactive state. The event reports are each sent with Small Data Transmission (SDT). The first event report may include a Request Assistance Data message indicating a request for an uplink (UL) Positioning Reference Signal (PRS) configuration and the second event report may include location measurement performed by the UE.

Method and apparatus for positioning of a user equipment in an inactive state

Techniques are provided for enabling on-demand positioning reference signals (PRS) with a user equipment (UE). An example method for determining a location of a mobile device includes sending a request for downlink positioning reference signals to a network server, where the request includes positioning reference signal configuration information, receiving assistance data based on the positioning reference signal configuration information, measuring one or more downlink positioning reference signals based at least in part on the positioning reference signal configuration information, and determining a location of the mobile device based at least on part on the measurements obtained from the one or more downlink positioning reference signals and the assistance data.

Systems and methods for support of on-demand positioning reference signals in a wireless network

Methods, systems, and devices for transmit power control for positioning using non-serving cells are described. A user equipment (UE) may determine that an uplink reference signal may be associated with a positioning procedure. In some cases, the positioning procedure may include transmission, by the UE, of the reference signal to a non-serving cell, which may be farther away from the UE than a serving cell. The UE may determine an absence of a parameter associated with a transmit power for transmitting the reference signal. Based on the absence, the UE may determine the transmit power based on parameters received from a serving cell, based on configuration information, based on a message intercepted from the cell other than the serving cell, or based on other considerations or information.

Transmit power control for positioning using non-serving cells

A user equipment (UE) receives reference signal resource configuration for transmitting reference signals for positioning from, e.g., a location server. The UE transmits or attempts to transmit reference signals for positioning to one or more transmission-reception points, such as a gNB. The UE may, however, may be unable to transmit reference signals in accordance with the reference signal resource configuration. For example, the UE may be unable to transmit the reference signals or may transmit the reference signals with lower power or a different spatial relation than configured. The UE may provide a reference signal transmission report indicating that the reference signals were not transmitted according to the reference signal resource configuration. The reference signal transmission report may indicate how the reference signal transmission differs from the reference signal resource configuration and may indicate the reasons that the reference signal transmission differs from the reference signal resource configuration.
