According to this invention, there is provided a drive apparatus for a power device having high- and low-voltage main electrodes and a control electrode, including a circuit for decreasing a voltage of the control electrode to a voltage of the control electrode which is not higher than a threshold voltage of the power device before a voltage between the high- and low-voltage main electrodes enters an overshoot region in a case where the power device is to be turned off. Therefore, electron injection can be stopped before the voltage between the main electrodes rises, the stability of the current density can be improved, and current concentration, oscillation, and the like can be prevented to improve reliability.

A power conversion system that is capable of achieving low inductance, improving cooling performance and making the external shape of the entire system small, is achieved by combining a plurality of single phase inverter units. The inverter units include four device packages each of which is composed of four packaged power devices, two neutral point clamp diodes, two by-pass diode packages and clamp diode packages. Each by-pass diode packages is composed of two packaged by-pass diodes. The clamp diode packages are composed of packaged clamp diodes. The by-pass diode packages are provided on one of the wall surfaces of the clamp diode package, and the device packages are provided on an outside wall surface of the by-pass diode package.

A power converter for starting an AC induction motor includes a frequency detector which compares the frequency of an AC output of the converter with a predetermined frequency and generates a detection signal if the AC output frequency is lower than the predetermined frequency, a current controller which controls the power converter such that an AC output current supplied to the motor is determined in accordance with a given current reference if the detection signal is generated, and a voltage controller which controls the power converter so that an AC output voltage applied to the motor is regulated in accordance with a given voltage reference if the detection signal disappears.

Helper drive apparatus for turbine drive system

This invention relates to an apparatus for driving an ac motor that includes a current controlled type power converter which produces an ac current or power having an arbitrary frequency at its output, a first switch provided to connect the power converter and the ac motor, and a second switch provided to connect an independent ac power supply and the ac motor. The apparatus operates in two switching modes, namely, switching from the ac power supply to the power converter and switching from the power converter to the ac power supply. To perform such a switching operation smoothly, the apparatus of the invention a voltage phase detector circuit for detecting the voltage phase of the ac power supply, detector circuit for detecting a value proportional to the power factor of the ac motor, a holding circuit for holding the value proportional to the power factor for a predetermined time, a current phase detector for detecting the current phase of the ac motor on the basis of the voltage phase of the ac power supply and the value proportional to the power factor, and a switching circuit for causing the first and second switches to be operative in synchronism with the phase detection signal.

Apparatus for driving AC motor

A turbine helper drive apparatus has an induction motor coupled to a turbine, and a power converter for power-controlling the motor. Part of the load of the turbine is shared by the motor in accordance with preset power for power control, so that auxiliary drive to compensate for the insufficient capacity of the turbine is performed and cheaper, late-night electric power is effectively utilized.

Imprementation is presented with a view to eliminating waveform distortion in an ac power supply device using a voltage type inverter. To realize this, there is provided a control system to detect a current flowing through a capacitor for absorbing higher harmonics provided along with a smoothing reactor between the voltage type inverter and a load to compare the current detector with a sine wave reference to control the voltage type inverter by making use of the compared result. To this control system, a correction control system for follow-up control of the output voltage of the ac power supply device may be added. The correction control system is configured to detect an output voltage of the ac power supply device which lags the capacitor current by a phase angle of 90 degrees to compare the output voltage detected with another sine wave which lags the sine wave reference by a phase angle of 90 degrees to use the compared result as a voltage control signal.

In a frequency converter of the type including a polyphase inverter which produces polyphase alternating current inherently containing higher harmonic components, a plurality of polyphase inverters are operated with a predetermined phase difference and the outputs thereof are sythesized by polyphase transformer means so as to eliminate higher harmonic components of relatively low orders, particularly the fifth and seventh higher harmonics.
