A cycloaliphatic diol antimicrobial agent selected from the group consisting of 1,1-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,2-cyclohexanedimethanol, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol, and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol was found to provide antimicrobial activity in coating compositions and latexes, and was found to enhance the effectiveness of other antimicrobial agents commonly used in coatings and dispersions. Alone or as part of a preservative system, this cycloaliphatic diol antimicrobial agent in water can provide an easy-to-handle liquid that allows coatings producers to achieve improved microbial control, or achieve equivalent control while using less antimicrobial agents in their formulations. Consequently, the shelf life of the products can be maintained while reducing the use of the traditional preservative, or the shelf-life can be enhanced with addition of this cycloaliphatic diol antimicrobial agent to an existing antimicrobial system.

Antimicrobial effect of cycloaliphatic diol antimicrobial agents in coating compositions

A sulfopolyester comprising repeat residue units from the reaction product dimethyl-5-sodiosulfoisophthalate, isophthalic acid, 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and diethylene glycol, has at least one property selected from: a) an acidity of greater than 0.030 measured as milliequivalents H/gram of sulfopolyester; b) a titanium concentration, measured as metal, of less than about 27 ppm, based on the amount of sulfopolyester; or c) an acidity of greater than 0.010 measured as milliequivalents H/gram of sulfopolyester, a pH of less than 6.0 and a concentration of a base compound of less than 0.0335 moles/kg of sulfopolyester. A method for making the water-dispersible or water-dissipative sulfopolyester of the present invention is disclosed. Aqueous dispersion having from 0.001 to about 35 weight % of the sulfopolyester of the present invention is also disclosed. The sulfopolyester is useful in making hair spray formulations suitable for pump or aerosol spray applicators.

Disclosed is a process for the recovery of a phytolipid composition from a vegetable oil by-product. The phytolipid composition produced comprises squalene, phytosterols, mixed tocopherols and tocotrieneols, and vegetable wax and is useful as an emollient. The phytochemical composition may be applied directly to the skin to provide emolliency. Alternatively, the phytolipid composition may be formulated in various aqueous or anhydrous cosmetic compositions such as creams, lotions, gels, ointments, lip balms, sticks, or pencils for treatment of the skin and lips. The phytolipid composition also may be incorporated into foods, beverages, and nutraceuticals to provide health benefits.

The present invention relates to an ozone-friendly correction fluid which dries quickly and bonds to paper surfaces for correcting all types of markings. The ozone-friendly correction fluid does not contain halogenated solvents or hydrocarbon solvents. More specifically, the correction fluid contains an acrylic resin having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) less than 40,000, acetone, and an opacifying pigment. The ozone-friendly correction fluid of the present invention may contain up to 80% solids and may be applied for correcting typewritten, handwritten, photocopied or laser-jet printed markings formed from waterborne or solventborne inks.

This invention relates to a cosmetic film forming composition which is freeze-thaw stable and is especially useful as a nail coating composition which upon drying forms a film which will adhere to keratin of a nail. More particularly, the present invention relates to cosmetic film forming compositions which consist of aqueous emulsion (A) which comprises a sulfopolyester and a copolymer of vinyl acetate and dialkyl maleate or fumarate; aqueous emulsion (B) which comprises an aqueous emulsion polymer of acetoacetoxyethyl alkylacrylate or the polymerization reaction product of acetoacetoxyethyl alkylacrylate with a vinylfunctional monomer; and (C) a freeze-thaw agent. The freeze-thaw agent imparts improved freeze-thaw properties to the composition without being detrimental to desirable properties such as fast drying time and good adhesive properties.

This invention relates to aerosol hair spray formulations based on (1) a sulfonate-containing, water-dispersible or water-dissipatible, linear polyester having a glass transition temperature of about 36.degree. C. to about 40.degree. C. and (2) a water-soluble, polyvinyl lactam polymer. In addition, the formulations contain water as the liquid vehicle and a propellant. Such aerosol hair spray formulations do not contain any volatile organic compounds other than propellant yet exhibit fast drying times and excellent performance characteristics.
