According to the present invention, techniques for controlling copying of logical volumes within a computer storage system are provided. A representative embodiment includes a plurality of storage devices controlled by a control unit, one or more processors, and a buffer memory for temporarily storing data read from the storage devices within the control unit. The storage devices can be addressed as logical volumes.

In creating replicas to data of a storage volume in a storage system, a technique in which labor for issuing instructions from a processor can be reduced and then data consistency of related volumes can be secured is provided. A single replication instruction including designated information is issued for data of a logical unit serving as a copy source and a copy destination from a replication-control program of the processor. A control unit of the storage system possesses a multiple-replica creation program which enables a processing for creating replicas while securing the data consistency when an access such as a update or reference occurs for a group including a plurality of pairs of copy-source volume and copy-destination volume based on reception of the instruction. A save volume is provided to identify and control data save and update state by copy-source save information and copy-destination update information at the shared memory.

Disclosed herein is a method for controlling a storage device controller connected to a storage device provided with a plurality of storage volumes for storing data respectively and an information processing apparatus for requesting an input/output of data so as to receive an input/output request from the information processing apparatus and execute an input/output processing of the data for each of the plurality of storage volumes. The method brings one (primary) of the plurality of storage volumes into correspondence with another (secondary) in which a copy of data is to be written when the data is written in the primary volume so as to form a pair group consisting of a plurality of pairs, each having such a primary volume and such a secondary volume. Upon receiving an input/output request from the information processing apparatus, the method starts resetting of the correspondence between storage volumes of each pair included in the pair group to decide whether or not it is after resetting of the correspondence is started that the request has been issued and executes an input/output processing after resetting the correspondence if the request is issued after resetting of the correspondence is started.

The following steps are performed in a storage system: when volumes configuring each volume pair are used by separate applications, storing, for each pair in a memory, an address where updating of data has been made in the volumes as updated-location-managing information; in case a destination-of-restoring copy volume configuring one pair is to be restored to have the contents of a source-for-restoring copy volume belonging to another pair, obtaining, from the memory, pieces of the updated-location-managing information for each of the pairs; generating differential information by merging the pieces of updated-location-managing information obtained, the differential information indicative of a difference in the pieces of updated-location-managing information between the copy volumes; and reproducing the destination-of-restoring copy volume to have the contents of the source-for-restoring copy volume, by copying data designated by the differential information from the source-for-restoring copy volume to the destination-of-restoring copy volume.
