The position of a smartphone placed on a touchscreen is determined. Smartphones are placed on a touchscreen of a table PC, and user interface images are displayed respectively around the smartphones to perform cooperation. The table PC displays a position pattern to determine the position of a smartphone being placed. The position pattern includes a pattern of two tones. A camera of the smartphone captures a blurred image of a predetermined location of the position pattern. The table PC identifies the position of the smartphone, from a tone value of the captured image received wirelessly from the smartphone. The table PC can thus determine the position of the smartphone without using special hardware.

A heat dissipation system within a housing of a computer is disclosed. The heat dissipation system includes a heat dissipating fan, a temperature sensor, a rotation speed setting portion, and a performance control portion. The rotation speed setting portion is configured to change a rotation speed of the heat dissipating fan in a stepwise manner based on a threshold temperature and a measurement temperature measured by the temperature sensor. The performance control portion is configured to temporarily reduce the processing capability of a processor within the computer in response to a determination that the measurement temperature has exceeded the threshold temperature during a predetermined period of time.

The invention provides a method for a portable electronic device such as a computer to be capable of safely coping with the occurrence of a surprise removal from an external hard disk drive (HDD) connected by wireless. An HDD is connected to a portable computer by wireless via a wireless extension device. First, a wireless communication path between the HDD and the portable computer is configured. Subsequently, a file is read and edited by accessing the HDD from the portable computer. Next, removal information indicating that the portable computer is away from the HDD is produced. The removal information can be produced by detecting an acceleration generated in the portable computer, or by directly detecting the distance by the strength of the wireless signal. Data under editing is saved before occurrence of surprise removal by ejecting the HDD in response to the production of the removal information.

Methods and arrangements for accessing wirelessly connected external storage devices

A camera system that transfers static image data while reducing power consumption is provided. A static image application issues a frame transfer command at a certain transfer period to a camera module. In each transfer period, the camera module wakes up from a suspend state and generates static image data. After the end of the transfer, the camera module transitions to the suspend state. The camera module is able to transition to the suspend state at each transfer period and thus is able to reduce power consumption.

A laptop PC is enabled to operate with small power consumption while maintaining a specific function. A laptop PC is provided with a HDD and can operate in a normal mode and a doze mode as a new operating mode. A use start event is generated indicating a start of use of the mobile terminal. A movement preparation period is measured from a time at which the use end event is generated to a time at which a transition from the first value to the second value occurs. A computer system having an operating environment configured for enabling boot up in a relatively short time is disclosed. A hard disk is utilized to store a boot file. A run process list registers a process to be run during boot up. When the computer system is being booted up, if the run process list registers a process to load the boot file, a process control unit does not control a process management unit, so that the process is run as usual. If the process is not registered, the process management unit suspends the process. When the suspended process is called by another process later, the process control unit makes the process resumed on demand.

A method and system are provided for thermal management of a portable computing apparatus. Accelerometers are provided to detect changes in attitude, and temperature sensors are provided to detect changes in temperature. A fan is used to cool the internal temperature of the electronic components of the computer. In response to lift of the computer from a stationary surface, the computer may transition to an alternative state of operation. The transition may include the change of the speed of the fan and/or adjustment of the processor clock.

The system image is verified by confirming that the first digital signature that is stored in the system BIOS matches a second digital signature that is stored in a mass storage device. In response to the first and second digital signatures matching, a virtual mass storage device is created. Control of the virtual mass storage device is transferred to a boot strap code in an operating system image and the operating system image is booted from the virtual mass storage device.
