High-resolution color and monochrome video images are recorded on and reproduced from a record medium. Red, green and blue signal components are recorded as respective monochrome-like signals in separate tracks, and since a chrominance component of the video signal is not recorded in each track, the bandwidth of the recorded video signal may exceed the bandwidth of a video signal that normally is stored on the record medium. The high-resolution color video signal is reproduced by reproducing three frames which contain the red, green and blue signal components, respectively, and by supplying these signal components as a single high-resolution color image. A high-resolution monochrome video signal is stored by sampling the monochrome video signal at a given clock signal to produce a first sampled signal and by sampling the monochrome video signal at an inverse clock signal to produce a second sampled signal which are recorded as separate monochrome frames. Upon reproduction, two frames corresponding to the two sampled signals are reproduced and combined in accordance with the clock and inverse clock signals to produce a high-resolution monochrome video image.

Digital data comprised of bytes formed of a predetermined number of data bits are encoded for representation in a video frame. Each byte of digital data, or a portion thereof, is represented in a respective region of the video frame by one or more video component levels that are assigned to the region and which correspond to the numerical value of the data bits of the byte or of the portion. The digital data are represented in the video frames in place of a video image or, alternatively, are represented in the same frames in which video images are recorded but in the areas of the frame in which the video image is not ordinarily recorded. Digital data represented in the video frame are decoded from the video component levels assigned to the regions.

Film transport apparatus for a cine-video system in which video signals are produced from film that is driven between supply and take-up reels. The film, which may be wound in A or B configuration on each reel, is threaded automatically about a film drive mechanism which transports the film from the supply reel, through a film gate to the take-up reel. Tensioning apparatus imparts tension to the film at the entry and exit of the film gate which, during the threading operation, causes the respective reels to rotate before film actually is transported therebetween. The direction in which each reel rotates to unwind film therefrom when tension is imparted serves to identify whether the film is wound in A or B configuration. Advantageously, a programmable processor controls the film transport speed in response to a user-actuated knob; and this same processor serves to detect when the film approaches its end on the supply or take-up reel.
