A naphthalocyanine derivative of the formula: ##STR1## wherein M, Y, R.sup.1, k, l, m, n are as defined in the specification, is an effective substance for forming a recording layer on a substrate of an optical recording medium having high sensitivity with good properties.

The liquid crystal display element of the present invention is free from a scattering domain.
