A projector includes: a light source that emits light having an asymmetric illuminance distribution; a light modulation device that modulates the light emitted from the light source; and an optical member disposed in an optical path between the light source and the light modulation device, the optical member changing the illuminance distribution of the light from the light source, wherein the optical member changes the illuminance distribution of the light passing therethrough in such a way that a highest illuminance area in the illuminance distribution of the light after passing through the optical member is shifted toward the center of the optical member as compared with the position of the highest illuminance area in the illuminance distribution of the light before incident on the optical member.

A light source device includes: a light source which emits light; a first reflector which surrounds a part of the light source and reflects the light emitted from the light source in the direction of an optical axis; and a second reflector which surrounds at least a part of the light source different from the part surrounded by the first reflector and reflects the light emitted from the light source toward the first reflector, wherein the position of a convergence spot of the light reflected by the second reflector is displaced from the position of an emission spot of the light source at least in the direction of a plane perpendicular to the direction of the optical axis.

A reflector used in combination with a light emitting portion that emits light and disposed around a central axis on which the light emitting portion is disposed includes a curved reflection section having the substantially same shape as that of a surface of revolution around the central axis, the curved reflection section reflecting light from the light emitting portion, and a flat deflection section formed on a flat surface positioned closer to the central axis than the surface of revolution, the flat deflection section deflecting the light from the light emitting portion forward. A projector includes a light source unit that emits coherent light, a spatial light modulation unit that modulates the coherent light emitted from the light source unit in accordance with an image signal, and a polarized light modulation unit having a plurality of modulating areas, each of which changing the polarization state of light. A display device includes a light source that supplies light, a phase modulator that modulates the phase of the light from the light source to form an image, and an imaging optical system that focuses the image formed through the modulation performed by the phase modulator. The phase modulator produces diffracted light according to a phase modulation pattern while changing the phase of the light so as to form an intermediate image between the phase modulator and the imaging optical system, and the phase modulator also changes the position of the intermediate image.

An illuminator includes a light source that outputs light, a polarization separation device that separates the light outputted from the light source into polarization components of the first and second oscillation directions, the polarization components having mutually orthogonal polarizations, and a polarization conversion device that converts the polarization component of the second oscillation direction divided by the polarization separation device to the polarization component of the first oscillation direction. The polarization component of the first oscillation direction divided by the polarization separation device and the polarization component of the first oscillation direction converted by the polarization conversion device are incident on an incident surface of an illumination target from different directions from each other.

Illuminator and projector with increased illumination efficiency

A light source device includes at least two light emitting parts which emit light; and a polarization separating part which transmits polarized light in a first vibrating direction of the lights from the light emitting part, and reflects polarized light in a second vibrating direction nearly orthogonal to the first vibrating direction, thereby to separate the lights from the light emitting part into the polarized light in the first vibrating direction and the polarized light in the second vibrating direction. Herein, the light emitting part includes a reflection part which reflects light that travels toward the light emitting part from the polarization separating part, in the direction of the polarization separating part. The polarization separating part synthesizes the polarized light in the first vibrating direction that has passed through the polarization separating part, and the polarized light in the second vibrating direction that has reflected on the polarization separating part, thereby to cause the synthesized light to travel in a predetermined direction.

Light source device and image display device

Aspects of the invention can provide an illuminating device and the like capable of efficiently supplying polarized light in a particular oscillation direction and suitable for a projector having a liquid crystal type spatial light modulator. The device can include a light source that supplies light, a collimating optical system that collimates the light from the light source into a substantially parallel light, and a reflecting type polarizing plate that transmits polarized light in a particular oscillation direction in the light from the collimating optical system and reflects polarized light in an oscillation direction different from the particular oscillation direction. The light source can include a reflecting portion that reflects light reflected by the reflecting type polarizing plate and advancing in the direction of the light source toward the collimating optical system.

An illuminating apparatus includes at least two solid light-emitting elements including a first solid light-emitting element and a second solid light-emitting element; a polarized-light combining unit that combines a first polarized light of a first oscillation direction and a second polarized light of a second oscillation direction substantially perpendicular to the second oscillating direction to guide the first polarized light and the second polarized light to an illumination direction by transmitting or reflecting the first polarized light and reflecting or transmitting the second polarized light; and a phase modulating element that converts a polarized light from the polarized-light combining unit into either of the first polarized light and the second polarized light.

Illuminating apparatus, image display apparatus, and projector

Aspects of the invention can provide an illuminator and others, which are able to supply polarized light having a certain oscillating direction as well as a certain wavelength range with high efficiency, and are suitable for a single-plate type projector using an LCD type spatial light modulator. The illuminator can include a light source, a rod integrator, a reflective polarizing plate, and a color filter. A reflecting mirror reflects polarized light, which has been reflected by the reflective polarizing plate, got injected into the rod integrator again through an emitting end, and progresses in the direction toward an injection end, in the direction toward the emitting end. Further, the reflecting mirror reflects light of any other wavelength range, which has been emitted through a first position of the emitting end, reflected by the color filter, got injected into the rod integrator again, and progresses in the direction toward an injection end, in the direction toward the emitting end to emit the light a second position that is different from the first position of the emitting end.
