An implantable stent comprises a tubular member having an interior surface and an exterior surface, with a region of at least one of the surfaces being hydrophobic. The region is provided with an array of microstructures or nanostructures that covers first portions of the surface but leaves second portions exposed in the interstices of the array. These structures cause the region to have a dynamically controllable hydrophobicity. In one embodiment, a control device, which is affixed to the tubular member, varies the hydrophobicity of the region. In another embodiment, which is particularly applicable to the delivery of a medicinal substance to fluids in body vessels, the stent also includes such a medicinal substance that adheres to the exposed portions until the control device alters the hydrophobicity of the region and causes the substance to be released into a body fluid in contact with the stent. Various ways to load the stent are described. In yet another embodiment, the tubular member is provided with a mechanism that enables the shape of the stent (e.g., its diameter) in vivo to be controlled dynamically, again by means of external wireless communication. In one more embodiment, sensors are affixed to the tubular member to enable fluid parameters (e.g., pressure, flow rate) to be monitored remotely.

Drug delivery stent

An apparatus comprising a rack having a row of shelves, each shelf supporting an electronics circuit board, each one of the circuit boards being manually removable from the shelve supporting the one of the circuit boards and having a local heat source thereon. The apparatus also comprises a cooler attached to the rack and being able to circulate a cooling fluid around a channel forming a closed loop. The apparatus further comprises a plurality of heat conduits, each heat conduit being located over a corresponding one of the circuit boards and forming a path to transport heat from the local heat source of the corresponding one of the circuit boards to the cooler. Each heat conduit is configured to be manually detachable from the cooler or the circuit board, without breaking a circulation pathway of the fluid through the cooler.

Mechanically-reattachable liquid-cooled cooling apparatus

In one embodiment, an electrode is disposed on a surface of a first portion of the dielectric, with the first portion and the electrode forming an electrode region of the device. A charge-dissipation structure is then formed by implanting ions into the electrode region and a second portion of the dielectric located outside of the electrode region. In another embodiment, a charge-dissipation structure is formed by implanting ions into the dielectric of a movable part of an electro-mechanical system. Advantageously, ion implantation can be performed without masking, lithography, or elevated temperatures; the electrical properties of the resulting charge dissipation structure can be controlled relatively easily; and portions of the charge dissipation structure are protected from oxidation and/or corrosion by the dielectric material.

Providing a charge dissipation structure for an electrostatically driven device

A biological/chemical detector is disclosed that is capable of manipulating liquids, such as reagent droplets, without relying on microchannels. In a first embodiment, fluid flow is passed through the detector, thus causing particles wholly or partially containing an illustrative chemical compound or biological species to be collected on the tips of nanostructures in the detector. A droplet of liquid is moved across the tips of the nanostructures, thus absorbing the particles into the liquid. The droplet is caused to penetrate the nanostructures in a desired location, thus causing the chemical compound or biological species in said liquid droplet to come into contact with, for example, a reagent. In another embodiment, a fluid flow is passed through the nanostructured surfaces of the detector such that the chemical compound and/or biological species are deposited between the nanoposts of a desired pixel. A droplet of liquid is moved across the surface to that desired pixel and is caused to penetrate the nanostructures of the pixel, thus contacting a reagent.

Dynamically controllable biological/chemical detectors having nanostructured surfaces

A charge-dissipation structure is formed within the dielectric of an electrostatically driven device, such as a micro-electro-mechanical systems ('MEMS') device, by ion implantation. Electrical and other properties of the charge-dissipation structure may be controlled by selection of the species, energy, and dose of implanted ions. With appropriate properties, such a charge-dissipation structure can reduce the effect on device operation of mobile charges in or on the dielectric.

Charge dissipation in electrostatically driven devices

The present invention provides an oxidation sensor for an electrical circuit or MEMS device that includes a conductor located on an insulating substrate and a sensor trace located on the insulating substrate adjacent the conductor. The sensor trace is located on the insulating substrate adjacent the conductor and is configured to oxidize at a rate greater than an electrical component associated with the sensor trace on the electrical circuit or MEMS device when the sensor trace and the electrical component are exposed to a same oxidizing environment. By oxidizing and thus becoming an open circuit more rapidly than any structure on a electrical circuit or MEMS device at a given relative humidity (i.e. in the same package), the oxidation sensor is designed to provide early warning of oxidation. Thus, the present invention serves as a sensor that will give advance warning of a leaky package and associated oxidation.

An optical communication system which conserves electrical power is disclosed. Electrical power is conserved in the optical communication system by coupling a splitter to an optical amplifier. The optical amplifier is configured to receive optical signals as well as pump light. The splitter provides a portion of the pump light used in the optical amplifier to other devices (e.g., optical amplifiers, filters, modulators) of the optical communication system. Providing a portion of the pump light used in the optical amplifier to other devices in the optical communication systems conserves electric power by reducing the total electrical power needed to operate the optical communication system.

Summarily described, the invention embraces an improved image-acquisition apparatus of the type having a transparent platen with an inner surface and outer surface, where a workpiece having graphic matter is positioned on the outer surface of the platen and an image-acquisition device disposed adjacent the inner surface of the platen transfers an image of the graphic matter to another medium. The inventive improvement comprises a preview display feature comprising a preview display screen visible to the user and an image-processing system disposed proximal the inner surface of the platen coupled to the preview display screen. The image-processing system images a region of the platen defining a platen-image and forms the platen-image upon the display screen. The image-processing system may also form upon the display screen a frame-image for indicating the portion of the platen bounding the image to be transferred so a user may determine whether a workpiece is placed in a desired orientation before operating the apparatus. The improved image-acquisition apparatus may comprise a photocopy machine, a scanner, or a facsimile machine, and preferably the platen-image is formed in real-time characteristics.

Method for performing image-acquisition with preview of image to be transferred

A method and article for monitoring and controlling power drift in the output of a diode array is described. The diode array is used, for example, as a light pump for a fiber laser. In one embodiment, an improved fiber laser includes the light pump, which launches light into a laser cavity. The fiber laser further includes a sampler operable to receive at least a portion of the light before it is launched into the laser cavity. The sampled portion represents a known fraction of the total light signal generated by the light pump. In some embodiments, the sampled light is directed, via the sampler, to a photodetector. The photodetector converts the sampled light into a first electrical signal and delivers it to a processor. The processor is operable to compare the electrical signal with a set-point signal representative of a desired power output of the sampled portion of the launched light. To the extent that a differential exists between the set point signal and the first electrical signal, the desired optical power is not being launched into the lasing cavity. If such a differential exists, the processor generates and sends a control signal to a controllable current source. The control signal is operable to increase or decrease the current delivered from the controllable current source to the light pump to correct power drifts in light pump output.

An improved platen-based image acquisition apparatus has a preview feature which enables the user to view anticipated output from the apparatus so adjustments may be made before operating the apparatus in orienting a workpiece upon the platen or in selecting image control features. The preview feature comprises a display screen visible to the user and an image-processing system coupled to the preview display screen. The image-processing system images a region of the platen to define the platen-image and forms the platen-image upon the display screen. It may simultaneously form upon the screen a frame-image for indicating the portion of the platen bounding the image to be processed so a user can determine whether a workpiece is positioned in a desired orientation before operating the apparatus. The improved image-acquisition apparatus may comprise a photocopy machine, a scanner, or a facsimile machine, and preferably the platen-image is formed in real-time characteristics.

An improved modulator and methods for making the modulator are disclosed. A membrane, preferably circular in shape, is formed over a region of a substrate in such a way that a gap results between the membrane and substrate forming a modulator cavity. The membrane forms a continuous surface over the cavity. In particular, the membrane is not supported by discrete support arms, but rather extends beyond the modulator cavity. Preferably, holes are formed in the membrane to aid in damping its motion and to allow access to underlying layers during modulator formation. According to the method, the modulator is formed by forming a means for creating a gap between the substrate and the membrane, forming a membrane, forming a lateral conduit to aid in removing the means for creating the gap and, finally, by removing the means for creating the gap.

Method and apparatus for an improved micromechanical modulator

A direct-view display comprising an array of micro-mechanical modulators is disclosed, he modulator used to form the display comprises a suspended, vertically moving membrane and a substrate. The device functions based on optical interference effects between the membrane and the substrate which cause the modulator to either substantially reflect or absorb an optical signal. The interference effects are a function of the size of the air gap between the membrane and substrate, which varies as the membrane moves. The membrane moves in response to a data signal, representative of an image, delivered to the modulator. The display generates an image based on the pattern of light and dark sections of the display corresponding to the reflectivity of each modulator at a given point in time.
