What is described herein are antimicrobial compositions which are defined blends of a 1,2-diol and phenoxyethanol which show broad activity against bacteria, fungi and mold spores. This activity is potentiated by the addition thereto of small amounts of a co-biocide for which the blend acts as a delivery system for the otherwise water-insoluble co-biocide.

An antimicrobial composition of 3-iodo-2-propynylbutyl carbamate (IPBC) and 1,3-butylene glycol (BG) as solvent, in a defined weight ratio, preferably 9-11% IPBC and 89-91% BG, and personal care formulations including the composition in an amount of about 0.1-0.2% therein, at a pH of 4-9, is described.

This invention relates to a broad spectrum antimicrobial composition, effective against gram negative and gram positive bacteria and fungi, which comprises a synergistic composition comprising iodopropynyl butyl carbamate and a bicyclic hydroxymethyl oxazolidine containing less than 0.1% of free formaldehyde.
