An electrically conducting gas diffusion substrate, capable of removing oxidisable impurities from an impure gas stream, which comprises an electrically conducting porous structure and a first catalytic component, wherein the first catalytic component comprises a first catalyst supported on an electrically non-conducting support is disclosed. In addition, an electrode, a membrane electrode assembly and a fuel cell each comprising said electrically conducting gas diffusion substrate is disclosed.

An electrically conducting gas diffusion substrate, capable of removing oxidizable impurities from an impure gas stream, which comprises an electrically conducting porous structure and a first catalytic component, wherein the first catalytic component comprises a first catalyst supported on an electrically non-conducting support is disclosed. In addition, an electrode, a membrane electrode assembly and a fuel cell each comprising said electrically conducting gas diffusion substrate is disclosed.

A novel flexible non-woven carbon fibre gas diffusion substrate comprising a plurality of first carbon fibres orientated in the x-, y- and optionally z-directions, said first fibres being bonded with a thermoplastic polymeric substance, and a carbon based filler material, characterised, in that the flexible non-woven carbon fibre gas diffusion substrate has a total density of greater than 0.35 g/cm, and a gas diffusion electrode obtained therefrom is disclosed. Also disclosed is a process for the manufacture of the substrate and electrode.

Gas diffusion substrate

A poison tolerant anode structure for use in fuel cells, in particular suitable for use on proton exchange membrane fuel cells, comprising a first catalytic component Pt&#x2014;Y where Y is a bronze forming element, and optionally a third metal X alloyed with the platinum, and a second catalytic component Pt&#x2014;M where M, metal, is alloyed with the platinum. An anode, a catalysed membrane, a membrane electrode assembly and a fuel cell comprising the electrode structure, are disclosed.

Electrode structure

A novel non-woven fiber web comprising a plurality of first fibers orientated in the x-, y-, and optionally z-directions, said first fibers being bonded with a polymeric substance, characterised in that one or more continuous strands are embedded within the sub-surface layer of the non-woven fiber web, each continuous strand comprising a plurality of second carbon fibers, is disclosed. A gas diffusion substrate, electrode and membrane electrode assembly comprising said web is also disclosed, all of which may have application in electrochemical devices, for example in a fuel cell.

Non-woven fiber webs

An improved catalyst material is derived from a precious metal-containing macrocyclic compound precursor, which contains precious metal in zero oxidation state. The material may be produced by activating the compound, for example by a voltage sweep. The material offers useful improvements in activity and resistance to de-activation, when used as a fuel cell catalyst.
