According to one aspect of the invention, a field emission display is provided comprising: an anode; a phosphor screen located on the anode; a cathode; an evacuated space between the anode and the cathode; an emitter located on the cathode opposite the phosphor; wherein the emitter comprises an electropositive element both in a body of the emitter and on a surface of the emitter. According to another aspect of the invention, a process for manufacturing a FED is provided comprising the steps of forming an emitter comprising an electropositive element in the body of the tip; positioning the emitter in opposing relation to a phosphor display screen; creating an evacuated space between the emitter tip and the phosphor display screen; and causing the electropositive element to migrate to an emission surface of the emitter.

Conductive or semiconductive binders, both inorganic and organic, are used for providing sufficient binding action to hold powder phosphor particles together, as well as to the glass screen of a field emission display device.

Manufacturing of field emission display screens by application of phosphor particles and conductive binders

A display device and a method for making and operating the display device are described. The display device comprises a base plate containing at least one emitter, a display screen, and a spacer located between the base plate and display screen, where the spacer has a high concentration of an emitter-cleaning material. The spacer may comprise a xerogel or aerogel material and the emitter-cleaning material may comprise hydrogen. The spacer and a method for making the spacer and using the spacer to clean an emitter are also described. The spacer material cleans the emitter by absorbing gases during fabrication of the display device and desorbing emitter-cleaning gases during operation of the display device. By keeping the emitter clean, the spacer retains the work function of the emitter at a low level, thereby prolonging the usefulness of the display device.

A process for operating a field emission display (FED) is disclosed. The FED has a faceplate and a baseplate, and a layer of praseodymium-manganese oxide disposed between the faceplate and baseplate. The layer absorbs photons during operation of the FED, and thus provides for improved performance of the FED because, for example, stray photons do not impact the underlying circuitry of the FED.
