A method of making high purity crystalline AlON bodies by synthesizing and calcining AlON powders having less than 80 ppm Si, Mg, Ca, Na, and K impurities. The AlON powders are milled to reduce the particle size of the AlON powders using a high purity milling media. An AlON body is formed from the milled AlON powders. Such AlON bodies are particularly suitable for semiconductor process chamber components.

Method of making high purity polycrystalline aluminum oxynitride bodies useful in semiconductor process chambers

A high performance transparent polycrystalline ceramic material is provided. The transparent polycrystalline ceramic material has a nitrogen-containing isotropic lattice structure and having 80% optical transmission at a wavelength between 3.86 and 4.30 microns through said material at 11 mm of thickness.

Transparent polycrystalline ceramic material

A method of braze joining a copper member to a substrate of metal or ceramic material is disclosed according to which a diffusion barrier coating as defined is applied to the substrate alone, and a selected brazing alloy is interposed between copper member and substrate, followed by a two-step heating treatment. In the first step the assembly is heated at a temperature and for a time sufficient to melt the brazing alloy and cause a bond to form between the brazing alloy and the copper member and between the brazing alloy and the substrate. In the second step the temperature is raised and maintained in the range from about 600.degree. C. to about 950.degree. C. in a 'solutionizing heat treatment' (as defined) for a time sufficient to allow the brazing alloy to form an 'extended solid solution' (as defined) with copper in a controlled fashion to convert the bond to a strong joint which is resistant to thermal stress.

A surgical instrument for use in endoscopic surgical procedures and especially arthroscopic surgery having an outer elongated tubular member and a concentric inner elongated tubular member positioned in and rotatable within the outer tubular member having an opening in its distal end and the inner tubular member having a cutting edge positioned at its distal end so as to coincide with and be exposable through the opening in the outer tubular member to effect the cutting of tissue and the removal of the cut tissue by aspiration through the inner tubular member, a coating of a metal from the group consisting of silver and gold extending substantially around the circumferential surface of at least one of the outer surface of the inner tubular member or the inner surface of the outer tubular member, the metallic coating from the group consisting of silver and gold being of such thickness and extending a sufficient distance along the axial length of the member to which it is applied to provide a malleable surface which more precisely controls and facilitates the rotation of the inner tubular member within the outer tubular member so as to virtually eliminate the production of metallic wear debris which can make its way to the incision site resulting in undesirable contamination and which can also reduce the scoring of the walls that can lead to the seizure of the surgical tool.

Tubular surgical cutting instruments with coating

Metal bonded carbon fiber-reinforced composites are disclosed in which the metal and the composite are strongly bound by (1) providing a matrix-depleted zone in the composite of sufficient depth to provide a binding site for the metal to be bonded and then (2) infiltrating the metal into the matrix-free zone to fill a substantial portion of the zone and also provide a surface layer of metal, thereby forming a strong bond between the composite and the metal. The invention also includes the metal-bound composite itself, as well as the provision of a coating over the metal for high-temperature performance or for joining to other such composites or to other substrates.

Metal-bonded, carbon fiber-reinforced composites
