The present disclosure describes methods and apparatus for real-time physical layer processing in distributed units (DU). A downlink data processing method includes receiving a downlink transport block at the physical layer and generating a plurality of sub-transport blocks mapped to a plurality of symbols by processing the received transport block. The method further includes processing the plurality of sub-transport blocks sequentially using at least one transfer function to generate the plurality of symbols which are then transmitted to a radio unit (RU) for transmission to a user equipment (UE). An uplink data processing method includes generating an uplink transport block by processing a plurality of symbols received at the DU from the RU. The plurality of symbols are processed using at least one uplink transfer function. A downlink/uplink transfer function is functionally equivalent to a plurality of downlink/uplink sequential signal processing modules.

Real time physical layer processing in distributed units

Techniques for reducing downlink data and/or uplink data transported in a distributed antenna system (DAS) are provided. Time domain data is transformed into a frequency domain. In the DAS, on a PRB-by-PRB basis, whether each of frequency-domain downlink digital data and frequency-domain uplink digital data comprise a meaningful signal is determined. Each of the frequency-domain downlink digital data and the frequency-domain uplink digital data comprising valid PRBs are subsequently transported in the DAS. Other techniques are disclosed for utilizing O-RAN user plane messages and corresponding O-RAN control plane messages in fronthaul transport of a distributed antenna system (DAS) to reduce bandwidth consumption and simplify management of the DAS. Bandwidth consumption in the fronthaul transport of the DAS is diminished by only transporting IQ data having a valid signal.

Techniques about converting time-domain fronthaul data to frequency-domain fronthaul data within a distributed antenna system

One embodiment is directed to a system to provide wireless coverage for a plurality of cells. The system comprises a virtualized headend and a plurality of remote units. The system is configured to operate as a distributed antenna system (DAS) when serving at least one of the cells. The plurality of remote units is configured to communicate with the virtualized headend using a switched Ethernet network. The virtualized headend is configured to communicate downlink user-plane data including frequency-domain IQ data and downlink control-plane data for a first cell served by at least one open radio access network (O-RAN) distributed unit (DU) to at least some of the remote units used to serve the first cell. At least some physical layer baseband processing for a wireless interface used to serve the first cell is performed by the virtualized headend or the remote units used to serve the first cell.

One embodiment is directed to adaptive predictive uplink receive chain processing that involves determining predicted data for one or more early data symbols of a slot based on first baseband IQ data received for the slot. The predicted data for the early data symbols of the slot comprises a predicted version of data used at some point in performing a first portion of uplink receive processing for the early data symbols. The first portion of the uplink receive processing for the early data symbols of the slot is performed using the predicted data. Actual data corresponding to the predicted data is determined based on at least second baseband IQ data received for the slot. In connection with performing a remaining portion of the uplink receive processing for the early data symbols, the preliminary output data for the early data symbols of the slot are adapted based on the actual data.
