A method for deblocking a blocked isocyanate is described herein. The method includes contacting a blocked isocyanate and a halide ion source under conditions effective to provide a deblocked isocyanate. A method of making a polyurethane is also disclosed. The method of making a polyurethane includes combining a blocked isocyanate, a polyol, and a halide ion source in the presence of solvent and under conditions effective to provide the polyurethane.

This disclosure provides a pigmented primer composition for forming an n-acyl urea coating on a substrate. The pigmented primer composition includes a polycarbodiimide-polyurethane hybrid. The pigmented primer composition also includes an acid functional polymer and an organic solvent, and includes less than or equal to 10 weight percent of water based on a total weight of the pigmented primer composition. The pigmented primer composition also includes a pigment, an inorganic filler, and less than about 100 parts by weight of toluene diisocyanate per one million parts by weight of the pigmented primer composition. The n-acyl urea coating exhibits corrosion resistance of 2 to 10 as determined using ASTM B117 and ASTM D-1654-08 on a substrate that is unpolished cold rolled steel, aluminum, or galvanized steel.

Pigmented primer composition for forming an n-acyl urea coating

This disclosure provides a solvent-borne system for forming an n-acyl urea coating on a substrate. In one embodiment, the solvent-borne system comprises a polycarbodiimide-polyurethane hybrid. The solvent-borne system also comprises an acid functional polymer and an organic solvent, and comprises less than or equal to 10 weight percent of water based on a total weight of said solvent-borne system. The solvent-borne system also comprises less than about 100 parts by weight of toluene diisocyanate per one million parts by weight of the solvent-borne system.

An economical method of manufacturing a plastic glazing panel having an encapsulation for aesthetic purposes and to enhance the sealing of the glazing panel to the vehicle is presented. This method includes the steps of forming a plastic panel having an A-side and B-side; printing an opaque border from an ink with the border being in contact with the B-side of the panel and substantially encircling the perimeter of the panel; curing the ink of the opaque border; applying a weatherable layer on the printed border and the plastic panel; curing the weatherable layer; depositing an abrasion resistant layer on the weatherable layer; placing the plastic panel into a mold having a soft gasket; injecting an elastomeric material to form an encapsulation that substantially encircles the perimeter of the plastic panel and encompasses the A-side; B-side and edge of the plastic panel; and removing the plastic panel from the mold.

This economical method includes the steps of forming a plastic panel; printing an opaque pattern from an ink, the pattern having an A-side and a B-side with the B-side being in contact with the plastic panel; curing the ink in the shape of the printed pattern using UV radiation directed at the ink from both the A-side and B-side; applying a weatherable layer on the A side of the pattern and on the plastic panel; curing the weatherable layer; and depositing an abrasion resistant layer onto the weatherable layer.

This invention relates to plastic glazing assemblies for vehicle tops, windows, headlamps, and taillights, as well as residential and commercial glazing, aircraft glazing, and sunglasses. More specifically, a method of manufacturing a plastic glazing assembly exhibiting a high level of weatherability and abrasion resistance is disclosed which integrates the in-mold application of a coating and the subsequent deposition of an abrasion resistant layer to a molded plastic part.

The present invention involves an automotive glazing panel having an ink that adheres to a plastic substrate and is compatible with a hard-coat system. The plastic substrate comprises an ink printed thereon and a hard-coat system applied on the ink. The ink has a synthetic resin which is a polycarbonate resin, a polyester resin or mixtures thereof. The hard-coat system includes a solvent having greater than 10 weight percent water and includes either a glycol ether, a ketone, an alcohol or an acetate. The ink is adaptable to adhere to the surface of the substrate and be compatible with the hard coat system.

Decorative ink for automotive plastic glazing

Carboxy resins of low equivalent weight per carboxyl group are synthesized by reacting a compound having two or more isocyanate groups with a compound having one hydroxyl group and two or more carboxyl groups. In a preferred embodiment, the compound having isocyanate groups is an isocyanurate derivative of a diisocyanate. The compound having isocyanate groups and the compound having one hydroxyl group and two or more carboxyl groups are reacted under conditions where reaction of carboxyl groups with isocyanate is substantially avoided. In another aspect of the invention, coating compositions are provided that contain in addition to the carboxy resin, a second component having a number of functional groups that are reactive with the carboxyl groups on the carboxy resin.

Coating compositions contain hydroxyl- or carbamate functional resins with a relatively low equivalent weight. The resins are based on a polyol core containing urea and hydroxyl groups, and made by reacting a polyisocyanate, preferably a triisocyanate, with an amino functional polyol, preferably a polyol having one amino group and two or more hydroxyl groups. The polyol core may be further extended to a first or higher generation dendrimer or hyperbranched structure by reacting the initial polyol core with a compound having one carboxyl group and two or more hydroxyl groups.

The invention provides a thermosetting aqueous primer composition that includes a dispersed polyurethane polymer, an acrylic polymer emulsion polymerized in the presence of the polyurethane dispersion, and a crosslinking component that is reactive with at least one of the polyurethane polymer and the acrylic polymer. The polyurethane polymer has a glass transition temperature of 0&deg; C. or less. The acrylic polymer has a glass transition temperature that is at least about 20&deg; C. higher than the glass transition temperature of polyurethane resin. The invention further provides a composite coating having as a primer layer a cured layer of the primer composition of the invention and having at least one topcoat layer.
