A thin holographic optical switch used in a liquid crystal display device contains opposing transparent substrates transparent electrodes between the substrates and a diffraction grating between the electrodes. The diffraction grating contains regions of transparent polymerized photopolymers and cholesteric liquid crystal micro-droplets. Refractive indexes of the photopolymers and liquid crystal are substantially the same when the electrodes have the same potential. The holographic optical switch transmits broadband LED light when the potential difference between the electrodes is zero and is polarization independent. The holographic optical switch diffracts broadband LED light when the potential difference between the electrodes is non-zero and is polarization independent.

A method, systems and apparatus for providing true-time-delayed signals using optical inputs is disclosed. In one aspect a system for providing optical true-time-delayed signals is provided. The system includes at least one optical source having emitting an optical signal having a predetermined wavelength, an optical waveguide optically coupled to the at least one optical source, and a diffraction element optically coupled to the waveguide, the diffraction element positioned along the waveguide at a predetermined distance.

The present invention is a three-dimensional tapered waveguide coupler capable of interconnecting electro-optical devices with differing optical mode profiles. The ends of the waveguide are configured to match the optical mode profiles of the electro-optical devices that the waveguide interconnects. The waveguide adiabatically transmits the fundamental mode of the photo-optic signal from the electro-optical device at the waveguide's input end to a different electro-optical device at the waveguide's output end. A single coupler can be configured with one or more waveguides, each waveguide having different optical mode profiles at either end and different optical transmission characteristics.

The device includes a plurality of optical inputs operable to communicate optical signals, a plurality of optical outputs optically coupled to the optical inputs and at least one thermo-optic array optically coupled to the plurality of optical inputs and the plurality of optical outputs. The device further includes an thermo-optical array operable to deflect an optical signal from one of the plurality of optical inputs to one of the plurality of optical outputs in response to a temperature differential.
