A method of treatment of an aqueous effluent stream obtained during production of furfural is disclosed. The aqueous effluent stream containing organic solvents, furfural, and water is subjected to azeotropic distillation to obtain a distillate stream and a treated effluent stream having lower BOD and COD values which can be further reduced by biomethanation.

Processes for the preparation of furfural from a xylose containing feedstock and more particularly to an elevated temperature conversion of a xylose containing feedstock to furfural in acidic conditions are described. The described process uses a mixture of two solvents in which the humins are formed and solubilized. A process for the hydrogenation of organic compounds using water soluble catalyst in a biphasic media by: (A) forming an organo-water dispersion of (i) an organic phase having (a) an organic compound and (b) an organic solvent, and (ii) an aqueous phase having a water soluble group VIII metal catalyst composition and a water soluble ligand; and (B) contacting said dispersion with hydrogen to provide an interfacial reaction between said organic compound and said hydrogen, giving significant enhancement in the rate of reaction to produce saturated organic compound as compared to a reaction carried out in the absence of said water immiscible ligand.

Process for the catalytic hydrogenation of organic compounds

A process is effected using water soluble metal complex catalysts in the presence of a promoter in the organic (water immiscible) phase. The process results in the enhancement of the rate of hydroformylation by interfacial catalysis induced by the presence of a ligand (promoter) in a catalyst immiscible phase.
